Ansar Khan (Mlive): Red Wings show Coyotes physical side in Game 1
Quote:
DETROIT -- When the playoffs started on Wednesday, the Detroit Red Wings rolled up their sleeves and got to work.

They delivered more hits, blocked more shots and took away more pucks than the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Red Wings showed more grit. They hope to continue playing that way today in Game 2 at Joe Louis Arena, with an opportunity to grab a 2-0 series lead.

"It’s the time of year when that becomes important," Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart said. "That’s what wins, the second-effort plays, blocking the shots and finishing the checks.

"It might not happen in the first 10 minutes, but by the third period it’ll start to wear on other teams, and that’s when you’re going to see positive effects. Where we can do a better job is doing it right from the start."

The Coyotes acknowledge they can’t match Detroit’s skill and firepower. They need excellent goaltending from Ilya Bryzgalov, who wasn’t in peak form in Game 1, and they need to win more battles.

"It’s our staple. It’s the way we play," Phoenix defenseman Ed Jovanovski said. "For some reason we weren’t on it. We’re a gritty team that gets in hard on the forecheck and tries to eliminate players from the puck and do what it takes to stop the puck from heading to the net, whether it’s blocking shots or what have you."

Said Coyotes captain Shane Doan: "You recognize their skill level and have to acknowledge they were a little bit more intense than we were. We have to find a way to ratchet up our intensity."

Doan was his club’s physical catalyst, as always, but coach Dave Tippett said not enough players followed his lead.

"When he’s a bull out there, that’s when he’s at his best," Tippett said. "When he’s a bull in a china shop, that’s even better than being a bull.

"That’s an element of our game that can be better. We had too many players that weren’t physically engaged enough. We need our whole group to be physically engaged, not just a couple of guys."

The Red Wings eliminated the Coyotes in seven games last year. Doan was knocked out of the series in Game 3 after tripping over goalie Jimmy Howard and crashing his shoulder into the boards.

"They might be a lot more skilled than I am, but I can at least be physical against them and at the same time contribute a little offensively," Doan said.

The Red Wings are bracing for more contact from Doan and his teammates.

"It’s going to be like that the whole series," Todd Bertuzzi said. "They got a big, physical team. They like to play that way, and we got some guys who can throw their weight around, too."

Doan said the Red Wings were trying to prove they can take the body. And he gave them credit.

"A few of their guys were definitely trying to make their presence felt," Doan said. "It’s playoff hockey. You’re supposed to. You look at guys like (Darren) Helm and (Justin) Abdelkader and (Drew) Miller, they want to prove they can be physical.
"If they were on my team, I’d be loving to see that. That’s exactly what you want out of your guys who are in that situation."

Doan said "a few guys" in his dressing room must take it personally.

"It has to be a group effort," he said. "It can’t be one or two guys trying to lead it."
Abdelkader, who had a couple of run-ins with Doan, said he believes the series is going to get more physical but said that isn’t necessarily Phoenix’s style.

"They’re more of an up-and-down, skating team. But I think they’re going to try to be more physical and get in on our (defense)," Abdelkader said. "We have to protect our ‘D’ and stay above their guys and play in their zone."

In other words, they must outwork the Coyotes. And, as Red Wings coach Mike Babcock often says, that’s what usually leads to victory.

Let's go Red Wings! Stay of the box, go up 2-0 and take the pressure off of an early Zetterberg return.

Nice work (once again). I've always been impressed the amount of time/effort it must take to put these GDT openers together.

One thing: Wojtek Wolski is listed on the Phoenix roster.

I think all those powerplays actually helped Detroit last game — once Detroit survived them.
We got a lift from killing them, and I think Phoenix got demoralized and flustered because they wasted all those opportunities.

If Detroit wins today, I think we're looking at a 4 or 5 game series. If Phoenix wins, I think we're still looking at a Detroit victory. Phoenix would have to win and be physically dominant for me to believe they can push this to seven or even win.

They just don't look as dedicated as they did last year.

The best players have to be the best players again...and I'd love to see them play with an edge like they did on Wednesday (ie--Bertuzzi showing some snarl). The one thing I'd change, let's not wait until the second period to turn up the heat.

GO WINGS!

The Detroit hockey that we all know and love came out in that 2nd period last game, let's get it going right from the start today, no letting up, we need to put this team on their backs flying home after today!

Let's go Red Wings!

Yeah this one looks amazing. Real proffesional, most of the other teams are real thrown together last minute, bare minumum information kinda stuff. Also have multiple streams right at the top, where as you really have to hunt for them for other games.

I'd like to know this as well. As a Stars fan that will be rooting for the Wings primarily for Modano it'd be great to see him in the great (for me, anyway, not sure how Wings fans feel).

I guess I'll find out soon.

I'm pessimistic about this game. You gotta think the Yotes are going to come out pissed and motivated. I don't know if the Wings are going to be able to step their game up as much as the opposition.

We'll see. One thing I've learned this year is that this team is impossible to predict.

Haha, you guys see video of Osgood ripping bettman?
http://http://www.mlive.com/redwings...s_to_stop.html
Vrbata seems to score a lot of big goals against the Wings over the years so I hope he's enveloped tight today.
Go Wings! and I hope an Octopus hits bettman in the face if he dares attend a game at The Joe and walk onto the ice. League trying to get fans busted for throwing the sea creature. Might as well ban hats thrown on the ice after a hat trick, a player might step on it and hurt himself, lol. Wish the owners would get rid that ny lawyer commish.
