Which UFAs Would You Re-Sign?

Just wondering which UFAs you think the organization should re-sign & why? I have not included Leclaire, I think it is fairly obvious he will not be re-signed. I've added Brust because there are some who want to sign him as a free agent, are there any others I may have missed? http://capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=23

Things to consider:
a) There are 14 regulars signed for next season on a 20-22 team roster.
b) There are 4 RFAs that most think may likely have roster jobs for next season (Greening, Z. Smith, Condra & Z. Smith).
c) There are a few rookies who have a shot at being on the roster next season (Cowen, Da Costa & Rundblad).
d) Murray has said that he is trying to add at least one UFA forward this summer.
e) Ottawa needs a backup goalie, Bingo needs a second goalie & the organization need at least one more goalie for depth & injuries.

UFAs to Re-sign

1. Ryan Shannon RW/C
2. Marek Svatos RW
3. Francis Lessard LW/RW
4. Curtis McElhinney G
5. David Hale LD
6. Derek Smith LD
7. Mike Brodeur G
8. André Benoit RD
9. Ryan Keller RW
10. Barry Brust G

Let's be more decisive, yes or no, if it's yes, they get a roster spot, if it's no they are no longer part of the organization, no more maybe.

Sens should sign Brust as the back-up in Ottawa next year, no doubt in my mind that he is better than McElhinney.

Re-sign
Shannon
D. Smith
D. Hale
Benoit
Keller

Keep them, they are good depth players

1. Ryan Shannon RW/C- YES, if he accepts a 1-year at the minimum raise
2. Marek Svatos RW- NO
3. Francis Lessard LW/RW- NO
4. Curtis McElhinney G- YES, for no more than $750K
5. David Hale LD- YES, if he accepts a 2-way
6. Derek Smith LD- NO- we need room for some d-prospects down there
7. Mike Brodeur G- YES- mentor to lehner, and we can't have brust down there in bingo next year
8. André Benoit RD- YES- if accepts a 2-way
9. Ryan Keller RW- YES- if he accepts a 2-way
10. Barry Brust G- NO- this isn't fair, but we can't have a goalie controversy in bingo next year. lehner needs to play 55+ games and brust is a road block to that

1. Ryan Shannon RW/C - No (A young prospect can develop in NHL with his minutes)
2. Marek Svatos RW - No (See above)
3. Francis Lessard LW/RW - No (garbage)
4. Curtis McElhinney G - No (garbage)
5. David Hale LD - No (Unless he wants to play in Bingo)
6. Derek Smith LD - No (Let him try to break in somewhere else, no chance here)
7. Mike Brodeur G - No (No space for him... Brust/Lehner AHL and we can sign a goalie project to begin in ECHL)
8. André Benoit RD - No (Same reason as Smith)
9. Ryan Keller RW - No (Same reason as Smith)
10. Barry Brust G - Yes (If he wants to mentor Lehner)

If the Bingo guys want to stay in Bingo... everyone but Brodeur could get one year deal to stay there

1. Ryan Shannon RW/C -> YES one way, slight raise
2. Marek Svatos RW -> PTO if good pre-season two-way
3. Francis Lessard LW/RW -> No
4. Curtis McElhinney G -> No, plenty of better back up options. I'd like Auld back.
5. David Hale LD -> Two-way. He won't get a one-way from another org, and he's a great depth guy and key to developing younger D in the AHL.
6. Derek Smith LD -> YES
7. Mike Brodeur G -> AHL contract, need some AHL depth
8. André Benoit RD -> YES
9. Ryan Keller RW -> AHL contract
10. Barry Brust G -> YES, two-way, he's earned it.

UFAs to Re-sign

1. Ryan Shannon RW/C - No - replaced by Condra
2. Marek Svatos RW - No - too soft & small
3. Francis Lessard LW/RW - No - force a better player to step up in his place
4. Curtis McElhinney G - Yes - is there a better, cheap UFA backup goalie?
5. David Hale LD - Yes - 1st callup or 7th D in Ottawa
6. Derek Smith LD - No - need to make room for prospects
7. Mike Brodeur G - No - find a younger UFA with potential for Elmira
8. André Benoit RD - No - need to make room for prospects
9. Ryan Keller RW - No - need to make room for prospects
10. Barry Brust G - No - his value has never been higher, give him a chance to go somewhere else to make more money or have a better opportunity.

Keep in mind that the organization still has Borowecki, Kinrade, Schira, Wiercioch & Gryba in Bingo & one or both of Cowen & Rundblad could be sent to Bingo. Then there is the possibility of Blood turning pro, which I think he will. Or they could keep D. Smith & Benoit & either send Kinrade & Schira to Elmira or waive them, both are possibilities.

I tend to agree - there is no need to re-sign guys like Shannon, Svatos, Hale etc...when young guys should be taking their minutes, whether in Binghamton or in Ottawa.

I'm assuming Ottawa will try to sign one or two of the guys to lead Binghamton next season - probably Derek Smith, Andre Benoit or Ryan Keller - but if those guys are serious about being NHL players, it would be in their best interest to sign elsewhere.

Keller was a 30 goal scorer in the AHL this season and you don't want to resign him to play in the A? Really?

You all need to think BEYOND Ottawa here...

1. Ryan Shannon RW/C --> League Min or let walk
2. Marek Svatos RW --> Could be a decent third liner, make an offer
3. Francis Lessard LW/RW --> Need him in the AHL to protect the young ones.
4. Curtis McElhinney G --> Bye
5. David Hale LD --> Sign if he takes a two-way
6. Derek Smith LD --> Two-way deal, fourth overall d-man in pts in the AHL
7. Mike Brodeur G --> His career is over, he isn't that good, see ya!
8. André Benoit RD --> Two-way deal or AHL contract, 2nd overall d-man in the AHL in points
9. Ryan Keller RW --> two way or AHL deal, 30 goal scorer in AHL
10. Barry Brust G --> two way deal, first callup to Ottawa

Now, if Cowen or other D-men prospects come to play in Bingo, then one of Hale/Benoit/D.Smith needs to not be re-signed. Depth in D is a huge problem if you ask me. Look at what happened last night, we have no one beyond the 6 guys we've got now.

Yes to:

Derek Smith LD good depth D-man

André Benoit RD good depth D-man, you can never have enough depth on the blue line.....

Barry Brust G 2 way deal he has earned it.....

Ryan Keller RW
chose him as he is captain in Binghamton.

Maybe to:

Ryan Shannon RW as he is a inexpensive option.

David Hale LD depth call up although he was out a lot this yr. So maybe another 2 way deal.

No to:

Mike Brodeur G he has not lived up to expectations + he is injury
prone, Org needs durable goalies wouldn't that be nice!!!!!

Francis Lessard LW/RW I think he could be replaced by younger enforcer, although I liked Lessard.
In fact I think the whole Org could use more grit............
Although I would not complain if they resigned him to protect the kids in Binghamton......

Do not know enough to comment:

Marek Svatos RW

Curtis McElhinney G

shannon has played well enough in the league this year to get a 1-way from SOMEBODY. he won't take a 2-way.
