I don't get these sobs that say that the Flyers are the new Rangers? Have they forgot about the cap, all teams got the same amount of cash to spend... Are people jealous because players don't sign "the big contracts" in Philly...?
First of all, what were the Rangers trying to do? Take a poor team and turn it in to a playoff contender simply by signing free agents. The Flyers haven't done that. The Flyers had a core of players, mostly drafted or traded for, that was already a good playoff team, and simply added to it. The additions of Hatcher, Rathje, and Forsberg were to make the team better, not to make it good in the first place.
There has never been, and never will be, any harm in trying to fill the holes in your team with free agents, like the Flyers have done. The Rangers tried to build a team with them, instead of developing their own players, and that is where they failed. Big difference.
^ Not to mention the fact that every team now operates within a fixed payroll range. The idea that a team can "buy" a Cup now while never being legally able to "out-payroll" a team by more than $17M is ridiculous.
