NBC/VS WIN new NHL TV Deal: $200MM/yr x 10 yrs, Exclusive Rights
A 2M per year increase on the cap would mean that in 10 years we would have an
80$ cap
It would be a one-time increase of $2 million, not another $2 million increase each year.
The TV deal does not seem to have annual increases, so the revenues will stay the same each year. Therefore, this should only affect the cap at the beginning, if I understand it correctly.
There's no threshold on the amount of centrally generated league revenue that would trigger part of it going to revenue sharing. The key figures are:
- The minimum revenue sharing pool is set each year at 4.5% of league HRR.
- Up to 25% of that pool will be sourced from "excess centrally generated league revenues, if any". So the target would be 1.125% of HRR.
For league revenues projected around $2.8B or so with the new TV deal that's around $31m per year of the TV deal that would go into the revenue sharing pool.

The Canadian and US TV monies would total, roughly, $340-ish MM, plus the Enterprises monies. Don't forget to not double count. One thing to point out: the articles I've read don't say the deal pays the NHL $200m each season, just that it averages $200m per season. It very well could be escalating year to year payments.

From what I could find, it's about $100 million per year.

Any idea about local exclusions, e.g., for the local rights holders to team broadcasts? I'm guessing there will be.
Also would like to know how they plan on choosing the 100 reg season games, limits per team, etc. Do you know how many are broadcast now?
This. Being on the same network as one of the fastest growing sports in the world definitely won't hurt, especially given the UFC's demographics.
Also, does anyone know what the NHL is getting from CBC and TSN? There's been a lot of numbers thrown around in here, so I apologize if it's already been listed.
How can they do this? Use other cable channels like USA?
They'd better hope that VS gets on a tier 1 cable package. I know the the ratings in Michigan take a huge hit when games are on VS as compared to FSD broadcasts as many homes don't have the channel. When you get the playoff games on NBC, these are much higher, by almost a factor of 2-3 as the homes w/o cable access can tune in.
I have a question that might be worth thinking about. Because Comcast/NBC/Versus won the deal, could they add another network to the coverage that is already in the NBC Family of networks. I am thinking mainly about USA, as I would like to see another network pick up at least the playoffs so all series can be represented somehow, like this year with the Ducks and Preds. Also, while it's not necessarily a match made in heaven, what about a cross promotion between the NHL and the WWE, from a promotional standpoint only. I'm talking mainly just advertising the NHL on Monday Night Raw (And Tough Enough maybe) which might bring in a lot of new viewers. It's kind of a silly thought, but I think it makes a little sense.

I'm losing track of how things go right now. Are they still split for the second round currently?
If yes, the local broadcasters are going to be spitting dummies. FSD is signed with the Wings through 2020. If this deal means they only get 1st round of the playoffs..... Honestly, can the NHL be accused of behaving like a cartel in this situation too?

Seriously, all my buddies in California don't even seem to know these networks the NHL ends up on. Except NBC, of course who will broadcast a couple of Ranger/Detroit playoff games after forcing them on a 1PM timeslot on a Sunday. We all know that's the NHL's sweet spot, after all it worked before, right?

Versus currently gets two games of each 2nd round series exclusively.

I will give props to VS for how the coverage has improved since the start. It took a few years but the VS broadcast is actually pretty good now.
And I hate ESPN with a passion. Any network that doesn't give hockey (a real sport) the time of day but shows poker, bowling, golf, tennis, basketball pretty much all day can disappear into the abyss for all I care. However, I do miss national hockey night. Bill Clement, Gary Thorne, the goalie masks with the team logos and that awesome intro music. Brings back such good memories. So I guess in that sense I was kinda pulling for ESPN here. Although they would have probably found a way to screw it up.
I initially thought I wanted ESPN to win this. I miss National Hockey Night, as it was the driving vehicle behind my exposure to hockey on television in highschool. Prior to that, I listened to everything on the radio. I also miss NHL2nite with Buccigross and Chicken Parm. However, ESPN has really treated hockey like ****. Tuning in to Sportscenter to get NHL highlights, is like, the biggest joke every. A real slap in the face. I never even watch ESPN anymore. Outside of Monday Night Football, and some of the college hockey tournament...it doesn't show any programming that I'm even remotely interested in. Versus has been great. I wish they'd come up with a top notch highlight show a la Sportscenter. I think they could give that entire network a run for their money in every aspect.

Honestly, that really sucks. I'm going to manipulate a Cdn postal code so I can get the CBC instead. Not happy to have more of my team's playoff games absconded by TV guys who cannot appreciate the team. (especially Edzo who would rather eat live frogs than say something nice about the Wings)

VERSUS will air 90 exclusive games next year. They aired 77 total last year, but 25 were bonus games. This will be 90 games airing exclusively in home markets.
So 15 games each for the Pens, Rangers, Wings, Hawks, Flyers and Bruins.
