Is there video of this hit with a clock? Because I didn't even really think it was worth the 2 minutes. This is ridiculous.
Sometimes you can understand a suspension being extra long because there was no penalty called in game (like Pronger-Holmstrom), but this time he did get the penalty. You're telling me Ruutu's hit was as dangerous as Stoll's?
I normally defend the front office on suspensions. I was all for 2 games for Ryan, and more for Pronger's stomp. I was fine with Pronger's suspensions in 2007 (even kind of thought he should get an extra for the 1st one). But this really just floors me. But Giordano is still dumb.
I'm not even sure how Erat got that badly hurt on the hit.
Someone mentioned somewhere that Erat has chronic back spasms, which is where I'll bet the injury is. I can't make out any contact to the head, considering all the awful camera angles we've been given. I've seen it from the Nashville feed when it happened, NHL on the fly last night, plus during an intermission report on VS today, and I'm yet to see an angle that wasn't taken from the other side of the ice. Nobody seriously has a close-up?
Meh I'm sure it's just karma. Ruutu has done plenty of stuff he should probably be suspended for. And it's not like he was going to be dressed next game anyways. Still pretty lame by the discipline committee.
So since this is a one game suspension in the playoffs, this means it's about 3 in the regular season? So every hit of this type is going to be 3 games in regular season from now on? Going to run out of players.
Purely reputation suspension and you really have to wonder what the hell goes on in the NHL head offices.
This decision continues the arbitrary approach of the NHL to discipline. If the league does not adopt a reasonably consistent policy it will never get its message through to the players as to what is and what is not acceptable. Instead, the application of discipline is so uneven that it encourages dirty play, since most times the player gets away with an inappropriate play without discipline.
As of right now the rule seems to be, if a star player gets hurt there is a suspension, unless the player doing the hitting is a star, in which case it was a hockey play and there is no suspension.
trawling through the garb that is this suspension, wondering how the hell it is even one. I start thinking about previous incidents.
1 specific one I think of is gaustad on Getzy. Now, I along with others thought there should have been a supension there, it was a late hit/ interference, yet no punishment. Getz was out a few games and was limited when back due to a broken nose and fish bowl he had to wear
now, 2 years (right time??) on, something similar happens, yet there is a suspension?????
maybe if rutuu had gone crawled off the ice pretending to be hurt he might have got away with it???
oh well, as randy says, we live by the league, and move on. Lets hope we have bobby in beast mode and use this as motivation and show people what the ducks hockey and playoff hockey is all about!!
