What's not to like about Cally. Love him. But I'd choose Gabby every day of the week and thrice in Sunday. Like I've said many times, having a hard working team is fine, but desire is not enough. This is the post lockout Buttman NHL. Look at the teams that advance. They all have discernible top lines (especially pivots), PMD's and crease clearers. We lack all these, imo.

we shouldn't be in a position where we have to win out the season to make the PO.s. Good teams don't have to worry about that

Philly did that last season, lost a few players in the playoffs...and still made it to the finals.

I don't care how the Rangers make it but if it equates to a Stanley Cup appearance, sign me up!

So did the Canes and Sabres who came from way back in the standings. The Canes controlled their destiny. Had they won we would have missed the PO's on a tie-breaker.

But I get your point.

Well put. That was my point, in a nutshell.

While I'm ok with our 10th overall choice last year, there were some serious skilled players we passed on. Please, I'm not bagging on the choice. He McI will help us down the road, hopefully.

I think it, obviously, takes a mixture of skill & heart. You don't win **** if you're missing either, collectively. The Rangers problem, clearly, wasn't heart this year. It was skill.

Well, now I think I have to root for Buffalo the rest of the way.

But the Flyers still made the finals, did they not? Eliminating higher ranked teams, did they not?

I don't care where they end up, neither should anyone else: If you don't make it to the finals, it's all for naught no matter where the team ends up in.

Cally was one of 23 roster players. He "carried" nothing. You do a disservice to Dubi, Boyle and the warriors on the blue-line and Hank of course. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Cally fan. My point is you stand a better shot at winning the Cup with a team full of Gabby's than a team full of Cally's. I'll take the chance of being wrong.

tortorella said it several times in the media at the end of the season:
'We're just not good enough"! That's a pretty strong statement to make publically, even though he was honest about it.

They had guts all season long with the incredible amount of man games they lost. it was absolutely incredible.

Had we been a healthy team all year, this story might have ended differently. ALOT differently. But still, the lack of top scoring talent is killing this franchise. it needs to stop.

Guys like Wolski are skilled, but thoses aren't the skilled players I'd ever want on my team.

We need consistent skilled players who don't take nights off. We also need a well balanced team. Determined, skilled players + a good goalie + heart and soul guys like Cally, Dubinsky, Prust, Boyle. Right now we have 2 of those 3.

And which part do our horrible contracts fit into?

I think the coaching staff has done an excellent job of getting the most out of the hand dealt to them.

Our coaching staff managed to get a lot of mileage out of the quality they had to work with. If you think we underachieved I think your opinion is way beyond what is realistic.

A lot of players made serious strides in their game, and I think that the coaching staff needs to be given credit for that. The same coaching staff also managed to install a system that got results, which the players believed in even when things were not going their way. For proof just look how guys sacrificed their bodies consistently to block shots. Our play wasn't pretty, but I think it is quite clear that it was very effective for the talent we had.

There are certainly things that were not positive, such as our PP, which was atrocious, but I can live with this when looking at the big picture.

I hope your emotions are getting the better of you in your post...

I think the Rangers might have done better in this series if it had been Gaborik out and Callahan healthy. Gaborik competed--had a number of nice chances but he never really turned his game up a notch.

The Rangers had only one line that consistently present a forechecking problem to the Caps and that was Boyle's. Fedetenko and Dubinsky were good as well but it wasn't enough and while we weren't in our own end for extended periods of time like in '09 the Caps definitely had a territorial advantage throughout the series. The playoffs depend a lot on attrition, on defense and goaltending and on gaining and controlling territory. Guys like Wolski, Christensen and Gaborik might be more skilled players than the other forwards but they don't play well when they're crowded out of space.

This series just showed how far "guts and heart" alone take you.

The heart and soul guys have their place, but so do the skill players.

heart > skill but you wont' win when you have 0 skill... anyway, i didn't see the guys lay any heart out on the line today. they lost the game and the series on wednesday in the 3rd period. they showed up in washington ready to lose when they should have showed up with nothing to lose and bash some Capitals.

Watching our plumbers playing their hearts out to no avail was not satisfying. To those of you who are pining to get rid of Gaborik, Wolski and Christiansen I say you're doomed to never seeing us win a Cup. I realize these three did not deliver, but relying on Boyle, Prust and Captain Valium to carry you is a recipe for disaster.

Heart and Guts is good, skill trumps both.

Flame away!
This is a silly post. You need the right mix to win anything. We lack in the skill department.
