For all those thinking we'll buy out Avery or Wolski instead--yeah, but we can still buy out Drury too. That Chris is willing to play a more limited role is nice but not for that kind of a cap hit. I really don't see where the negotiation is on that. The Rangers have decisions to make like in any other year and Drury's being bought out if he won't retire IMO is the easiest one to make this year.

It's pretty clear he's going to give it a shot and none of his injuries are the type of injuries that are going to PREVENT him from being able to skate or use his body to play. They may have slowed him down, but it's not injuries that he can't rehab. Whether or not he rehabilitates himself to being a 50-60 point player again has yet to be seen, but it's not as if he tore all 3 ligaments in his knee.

Happy with your limited role, Drury, you bum?

EDIT: Sorry for the double post; I received a HFBoards' database error.

Nonetheless, the statement from Torts is so nice, it should be shouted twice, imo.

Would be amazing if that's exactly what Torts did.

Hey man, Surf'n'Turf isn't cheap, and if Drury doesn't get his lemon-garlic-butter sauteed lobster tail and fillet, it ruins his weekend.

Fitting both Richards and Drury and re-signing all of Callahan, Dubinsky, Anisimov, Boyle and Sauer could make for a tight squeeze and what if you could add a puck moving defenseman through a trade or free agency only you run short of cap space just because you have a $7 mil 4th liner who is okay with his limited role? We've also heard Brooks Laich being brought up--Ville Leino--either of these players would be good additions. Options are so much better freeing up even half of his salary for next year. Continued improvement of our younger players next year--adding a Richards + a more offensive d to help make the pwp go--could (should) also give Gaborik a boost--adding a great 3rd liner who can easily move up to your 2nd line like either Laich or Leino and we might be in the 2-5 range in the East instead of the 6-9 range.

Tortorella on Drury: “Intangibles always come into evaluating. You just can’t let the intangibles override other things, too. Dru and I have a great relationship. We’ve been very honest with one another. Dru is getting older. That’s why he has this chronic knee, and it’s amazing he was able to come back when he did. But we have to make decisions for what’s best for the organization moving on. … It’s certainly not mine, my total decision, but I have my thoughts. These are all conversations we have to have.”

Torts threw Drury under the bus.

It's what Dru did not do in the series with the Caps that is ending his tenure with the team. A clutch goal or two, a key face off win leading to a goal or anything like that and we're having a different discussion here....maybe.

Torts is saying what's real. Dru is saying what he has to. Either way he's done with the Rangers, imo.

Pretty sad. The only thing sadder would be repeating the mistake of going out and adding more players at inflated prices. It never works...or at least I can't think of a time when it has.

Good for Torts saying that. It's true.

Is there anything in the CBA that wouldn't allow them to pay Drury $5m to be a scout next year if he retired?

****, let him be an assistant coach, etc.

Of course Drury makes an absurd amount of money. So do all professional athletes for that matter. What difference does that make? I'm sure Jaime would be thrilled if you walked away from a $5 million dollar a year contract because everybody else thinks it's for the good of the company. If anybody here says that they would walk away from that kind of money then they are flat out lying and that's all there is to it so to ask Drury to do the same is hypocritical, that's all I'm saying.

If Drury cares about the team and not his paycheck he won't take what Torts said personally, because he's 100% right.

If he still wants to play hockey it needs to be for cheap, and not in NY!

Lying? Did you read the article someone posted about the guy who walked from his contract?

Stop projecting, we're not all greedy jerks. It's not the same either when you are making millions every year. You might be able to look at the bigger picture from a different paradigm than people like us making anywhere from minimum wage to xxx,xxx amount of dollars.

And at the same time you cannot totally discount why he would take the money in regards to the business side of Pro Hockey. His contract is not just his, it effects past, current and future Pro players. Team player goes BOTH ways in these scenarios.

I suppose there is a fair point to be made about players not letting themselves get bullied in to early retirement, or always bowing to the will of the guy writing the checks. Every situation is different.

Just bothers me that people assume we're all the same when it comes to a love or desire of money, is all.

Agreed, its not always about money.
