If he's as good as we think he can be, he'll rebound. Removing him from the active roster altogether was a rather strange decision, but I've long since given up figuring out the Flyers' goalie situation.
I see what you're saying (even though the team as a whole played worse the 2nd half....even Boucher's stats dipped) but he was still named the playoff starter, and started way more games down the stretch. Just doesn't make a lot of sense, knee jerk reaction.

He played strongly going into the play-offs. Had a stretch of 7 or 8 games with a 95+ save percentage (and one bad game after that), in spite of mediocre team play in front of him. They really ought to at least have let Bob be the back up. There's got to be more than meets the eye going on here.

As much as I love being an active participant in a hyperbole festival, there is a middle-of-the-road stance on Leighton. With him in nets, the team had success last year. He had some very good games, even in the playoffs. Heck, he even provided a feel-good story of the journeyman taking center stage. The problems were that a) the clock struck midnight on Cinderella during the finals, and b) he got rewarded witha big (relative to other FAs) contract and was essentially slotted into the starter's spot in the off-season. The back injury exacerbated the situation, only to have Paul Holmgren benefitting from an unknown setting the league on fire for the first half of the season.

I guess that part of it, too, is still trying to conceive of Holmgren not being able to convince FA goaltenders like Turco and Nabokov to take the wide-open #1 slot on a team coming off a Cup finals appearance. How many cards did he need in his hands to land an upgrade?

That would be gay. It's not his fault he sucks.

Turco: Hello, this is Marty Turco, NHL goaltender.

Homer: Hi, it's Paul Holmgren. I would like to offer you 2 million dollars.

Turco: Hm. How about 2.3?

Homer: *Hangs up with brutal force* "HE'S PLAYING HARD TO GET! LEIGHTON IT IS!"

Turco: Hello? Sir?

A gay chant would be "Leighton touches men," the proposed one is just plain rude lol.

I think it's the case of a coach preferring the veteran with playoff experience over the rookie. I'm all for running Leighton out of town, but I'll honestly be surprised if he is not the backup.

I was excited to have Leighton as a third as I was pretty sure Bob was going to be exposed in the playoffs. It turns out he was and Boucher had a bad game (like he does from time to time) so IT WAS good to have a third goalie. The problem is, Leighton was FAR WORSE than any of the insults or hate he gets on this site could explain.

So, it is Boucher or bust. **** ME!!!

Who’s No. 2?

Coach Peter Laviolette shocked media and fans alike on Sunday, when he elected to make public his decision to start Brian Boucher in net for Game 7 – such announcements, for Laviolette, usually don’t occur until gameday.

So, on Monday, was he ready to provide his choice for Boucher’s backup?

“No,” Laviolette said.

There are clues, though. Sergei Bobrovsky skated with the Black Aces Monday morning, but Michael Leighton was nowhere to be seen.

He was actually absent b/c he was getting fitted for his custom-made playoff paperbag....

Wait...was he banished??? Seriously??? And was Backlund practicing...? Seems like a waste of a net in valuable practice time if Bob was with the black aces.

It honestly doesn't matter to me. In the case that we have to play the back-up goalie, our next game will be in October.

Even more strangely, the Maid of the Mist actually passed between the pads.

I laugh in the face of goalie situations.

And by laugh I mean a very nervous laugh only brought on by the fact that our goalie situation has been the worst in the league since Hextall.

leighton and the flyers organization way of handling the goalie issue is such a joke that even complete non-hockey fans know about it and know how much leighton sucks..

I've had a day to calm myself down. I've decided that I was wayyy too hard on Leighton. He was thrust into a very difficult situation. Although I'd struggle to say that he gave it his "best." He obviously does not have the talent to be a starting goaltender in the NHL.

It was a little depressing seeing him called out by pretty much every sportscaster, internet message forum, blogger, or pretty much anyone who watched the game.

That single period may go down as one of the WORST playoff goaltending performances anyone has ever seen and Leighton may never play in the NHL again because of it. The certainty of him being waived next season is so close to 100% that if someone were willing to take bets I'd throw a couple thousand on it.

In summary, we have seen the end of Michael Leighton on the Flyers (barring some kind of catastrophic injuries to our goalies).
