Is that Hexy's kid? NHL.com has his place of birth as Philly but the NHL Network crew said he was not related and from California. Congrats on going#159 to Phoenix if it his his son.

Ron Hextall's grandfather, Bryan, Sr., played for the New York Rangers in the 1930s and 1940s.

His father, Bryan, Jr., and uncle, Dennis, played for eight different NHL teams in the 1970s.

Ron followed by playing for three NHL teams in the 1980s and 1990s.

Which begs this question: Could Brett Hextall be a fourth generation NHLer?

An undrafted 19-year-old center now playing for the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League, Hextall has 20 goals and 41 assists in 46 games this season and has committed to play for the University of North Dakota next season.

"Brett's a hard-working kid," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said.

"He's very aggressive. He's not real big (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) but he's filled out nicely. North Dakota is like a hockey factory, so that's not a bad place to develop as a player. He has a chance."

Steve Mountain, Ron Hextall's agent when he was a player and Brett Hextall's coach when he played three seasons for the Valley Forge (Pa.) Minutemen, said there is no question in his mind that Brett will someday lace up his skates in the NHL.

"He's got a lot of Steve Downie in him," Mountain said. "He's not afraid of anybody. His teammates took a vote on who was the toughest on the team and he won. He's going to play in the NHL."

Brett Hextall piled up 156 penalty minutes in 59 games last season, but has just 52 penalty minutes through 46 games this season.

"He got his mother's genes," Ron Hextall joked. "I've got her to blame."

Too bad he didn't inherit his father's size. Only 5'10" 175lbs.

I wish we could have used a late pick on him but I guess we didn't have many picks in those middle rounds this year... just doesn't seem right to have a Hextall in Phoenix! Maybe we are holding out for his younger son Jeffrey who is a goalie... he will be draft eligible in a few years. I met Ron & Diane at a dinner last year and she said Jeffrey is just like his Dad. They are great people, very nice.

NHL crew is clueless if they can't figure out that this is Ron's kid... of course he lives in Cali as Ron works for the Kings. Duh.

Long live Hexy!

Don't worry, if the kid turns out to be decent, Homer will just add Phoenix to the list of teams he fleeces.

This kid is a cheap-shot artist who plays for the collective resident goons in the NCAA, North Dakota. He isn't respected in the WCHA and, like mentioned, is too small to play in the NHL.

Chris Osgood: 5'10
Tim Thomas: 5'11
^ DISREGARD THAT. I'M AN IDIOT AND I THOUGHT HEXY WAS GONNA BE A GOALIE LIKE HIS POP. KEEPING IT THERE SO EVERYONE CAN SEE I'M DUMB

If anyone ever tells you you're too small or not strong enough, get on the ice and prove they're wrong.

With his skates on......

But you're right, and we can just look to the other side of the bench today and say Nathan Gerbe. If Hextall is talented enough, and works hard enough, he'll play.

Hexy's youngest son Jeffrey is a goalie though... not sure how old he is now. I met Diane (Ron's wife) when Hexy was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, she said the youngest is just like Ron. She was super nice. His daughter Kristin was a college soccer star in the States. Ron's wife was a figure skater.

I have a friend that plays with the younger vanRiemsdyk, says his hands are unreal. I would hope he surprises and becomes an NHLer.

Biased much?

That said, Brett Hextall won't be an NHL player. Has no single skill that's NHL caliber, nor is the complete package anything special.

My cousin was her roommate at La Salle. She used to come to my family's thanksgiving dinners and other family functions. Can't say enough how nice they all seemed. I met Ron at one of their games and he was very down to earth, just seemed like any other guy you would BS with sitting next to at a sporting event.

Didn't really meet the rest of the family, but from how my cousin, aunt, and uncle used to talk about them they seem like a class bunch. Gotta root for people like that to succeed. I hope to see Brett in the NHL, I know I will be rooting for him.
