2011 IIHF World Championships

Now that the kings have been eliminated I figured a thread could be made for this.

I would expect some guys to join their respective nations and play.

USA:
Jack Johnson-would be surprised if he didn't go
Dustin Brown-Probably not
Jonathan Quick-Maybe
Matt Greene-Maybe

Canada:
Drew Doughty-could see him going if they called although being an RFA could change that

Slovakia:
Handzus-Free agent so probably not

thats all I could think of off the top of my head, feel free to add people I forgot.

It'll be a tough decision for Zus since the tournament is in Slovakia.

Canada already has 12 forwards on their roster. They can only add 3 skaters and 1 goalie right now (and add 2 after the round robin). They currently only have 5 d-man so 2 of those 3 spots are probably going there. I'd doubt if they're looking to use their 1 forward spot on anyone on the Kings (other than Smyth) when guys like Perry, Getzlaf, and Doan are already available plus whomever else becomes available in the next 2 days.

Smyth would be a novelty choice due to the whole "Captain Canada" stuff but they'd be crazy to add him with the other guys they have available. They added him last year though so who knows.

I'm pretty sure Smyth will get an invite if for no other reason than experience. He's been there so many times, he knows what to expect.

I do wonder if we see Schenn get invited as an alternate like Jordan Eberle did though? Then again, playing on Team Canada would be team 6 and it would be in a time zone about 8 hours ahead of what he is used to.

Anyone think Bernier might go as a goalie? Beyond Reimer (even with him), Canada's goaltending isn't top notch like in past years. Generally, Canada has a big name goalie available to them for this tournament. But not this year.

On the US side, Brown, Johnson and Quick are slam dunks to be invited.

Slovakia will invite Handzus, whether or not he goes is another story.

I'm not sure that anyone else in the Kings' system will get an invite. The only person we may see is Constantin Braun for Germany. Seems to me the Kings hold his rights still.

USA Hockey has a full roster of skaters right now. They have 1 goalie spot left but I'd be surprised if Quick is even considering his offer.

Assuming Jack didn't turn down an offer in the less than 12 hours since we were eliminated, you have to think he's going to be a little peeved.

Smyth may get an invite but only because other guys turn down their offers like Getzlaf did. Perry is still deciding.

That would suck for JJ if he doesn't get a spot because of a full roster. He deserves one for his dedication to USA hockey over the years.

There's not a spot left. They can add 2 more skaters after their first 3 games but who knows if JJ would be willing to wait around for that. Plus, the USA squad needs forwards more than they need d-men.

It's a product of all the denials USA Hockey gets for this tournament. They get all paranoid that they won't be able to field a full roster and start adding anyone that's willing to play. At least the 2 d-men they added yesterday are good (Fowler and McDonagh) but some of the guys that got spots earlier were out of complete panic. Oh well. This isn't all the surprising. 2 years ago they added Chris Higgins in their last spot and then right after that Zach Parise was available and wanted to play but couldn't and he wasn't too happy about it.

Moller and Voynov probably have outside shots.

Ponikarovsky if Ukraine is in.

Don't be surprised if Lewis gets an invite....Harrold played for USA at WC's a couple years ago.

Scuderi was a final cut for the Olympics.

Ukraine isn't in the main tournament. They were in the Division 1 World Championships. Their tournament is already over. Unfortunate for Poni since Ukraine's group played in Ukraine.

No Americans for Team USA, other than Quick, can get immediate invites. The roster is full right now.

Stoked that Jack is playing. His passion is awesome. Hopefully he gets a letter again. I wonder which d-man is going to have to sit out the round robin games now. USA Hockey must not have registered all the players with the IIHF yet. Hopefully it's Komisarek but it'll probably be Jake Gardiner.

In case anyone doesn't now...VS is televising all of the Team USA games during the WC so tune in/record the games and watch Jack go!

Yes they are slam dunks to join, however, Brown just added a kid to his family recently. No way in hell he goes. I can see Quick going though, glad to see JJ join. Zeus should join IMO. What about Ziggy Palffy?

Without Quick to steal a few games the US roster looks pretty weak.

If with Miller or Quick the US roster would still be embarrassing. The defense is ok but that group of forwards is flat out bad.

Really impressed with Johnson, basically the only high profile American that didn't turn usa down. I might be missing someone else.

Hopefully Nonis invites Doughty and he accepts.
