Leighton AWOL (update, post #153: suffered a wrenched back)

From Anthony SanFilippo at DelCo Daily Times at http://anthonysintheroom.blogspot.com/

Quote:

However one team source told the Daily TImes tonight that Leighton was very upset with himself after his Game 6 performance and didn't show up for practice Monday.

According to the source, the Flyers tried to contact him Monday but couldn't reach him. They finally got through to him earlier on Tuesday.
Hope he's ok.

Seems to me the guy takes his poor performances not so well, him crying after getting pulled in game 1 of the SCF is what i think of.

Ouch.....how unfortunate. Don't wish him harm despite the jest we've all had at his expense. However, this should finally put to rest the Leighton soap opera. It was an ill advised signing from the beginning...this is what happens when you overvalue players...you hurt your team and invariably the other person if they are not mentally strong.

That would likely explain his drop on the depth chart to fourth string.

I don't like the sound of that, while I definitely am not a fan of his play...I sincerely hope all is well emotionally for him right now.

poor dude, but seriously he must have known he was not capable of doing the job asked of him? i mean, sure, he has to have some self confidence but he has to know last year was a fluke right? right?! especially after only playing 1 NHL game.

i am not an NHL goaltender but for the sake of the team i think i would be able to say "there is no way i can perform up to the standard that is needed to succeed"

that sounds sarcastic but i am 100% serious.

I don't blame Leighton for that game at all, it was ridiculous to put him in that position after playing one NHL game this year.

He is being to hard on himself.

You'd be upset too if you screwed up, lost your job and then a year later your boss threw you a bone and offered your job back only for you to screw up your first day back to the point where nobody in the industry will ever hire you again.

Looks like the clock struck midnight for leighton...but in a couple of months he'll be appreciative of that nice contract.

He's just upset because he knows that everyone in the NHL knows that he doesn't belong there and his dream is over. Oh well.

I feel a bit sorry for Leighton, but:
a) he had the opportunity to be at center stage in the NHL: the Cup finals
b) he has played in 104 NHL games over 6 seasons
c) he was paid $1.5 million this year and is guaranteed the same next year

That's a decent career, if you ask me. And we will have to see him as some part of this organization next year.

How can you be mad at this????

I feel real bad for him. As much as HF gets on his back, he really did carry us through out the playoffs last year. No matter how mad we can be at Leighton, we wouldn't have been in game 6 of the SC Finals if it wasn't for his play. He gave up that bad goal in OT, but what can you do?

I think Leighton deserves another chance in the NHL. He did play well in relief in game 5. Leighton gave up some real crap goals in game 6, but Boucher did the same in game 5. If Boucher got another chance, Leighton deserves one.

If you make it to the NHL, self confidence is probably the last of your worries. I'm sure everyone in the league believes they are truly elite and will be able to do whatever is needed. Hence why Leighton, Bob, etc. all turn to wrecks when they lose. **** when Boosh was pulled he went ******* in the tunnel. Was he just supposed to go "Oh they know i suck, i should just grab a beer."

I'm sure if you even ask someone like... Sean Avery or something he would be happy to step out and do whatever job and believe he can accomplish anything. If Torts was like Avery, we need you to score like Ovechkin, Avery would be like **** yeah count on me. That's what makes these people so good at what they do.

Mr. Holmgren, I would suggest you log off of HF Boards and start making friends with Bryzgalov's agent. Nothing meddling-like or anything. Just friends. Heck, have Bryz go out for some drinks with Carter.

Ha thanks for the compliment. Of course I think the Flyers need to upgrade in goal. Every time the puck is in our zone I panic a bit. If we don't have confidence in our goalies, how can the players? You can see it in their cautious game at some points. They play'd like they're down a man for much of the series.

As for Bryzgalov, I'd be for bringing him in, but what does that do to Bob? If we pay him anything close to what he's getting paid now, he'd want to start, not split. I'd love to see him, let's cross our fingers.

I really wish we traded for Quick.

I also hope someone gives him another chance in the NHL. Preferably the Pens or Devils. As long as it's not the Flyers, I'm fine with it.

Blaming his teammates for the OT goal, being about as poor as he could possibly be in game 6 (not all his fault, he can't help it if he's Michael Leighton, and he should never have been put in that position), and then bailing on the team and the organization should get him a one way ticket out of town forever.

****** deal. Let's hope he doesn't hurt himself anymore.... in any capacity.

I'd rather not see him in a Flyers uniform again.... having said that, I do hope he is okay and the team is working with his emotional standing.

Preach it, sister! Leighton has just done pretty much everything wrong that one can in this offseason. Yes, he was in a near-impossible spot to excel, but for the love of Terry Sawchuk, don't dump on your defensemen.
