Report: Hamrlik to sign with Calgary

Dowbiggin was on the Fan 960 here in Calgary just now and says the Flames have signed Hamrlik to a 2-year deal worth 3.5mil per year. Fan960 will be posting it on their website I'm guessing and then TSN, Sportsnet, etc. will follow suit. The Calgary Herald got the scoop on this one through Dowbiggin but their website is crap so forget about seeing it there. We'll see when Hamrlik's signing is announced.

If you can listen live to the station on the web at www.fan960.com or you live in Calgary, check out their sports updates every 20 minutes and it'll be announced there too, I'm sure of it. Just assuming this isn't a false alarm and not a bullsh!t story, which I believe it isn't, I must say: Wow, Calgary Flames fans have got to be excited. What a good team Daryll Sutter has built. We'll see how it goes! Wish the Habs could've gotten him but at 3.5M, meh.

Okay, w/ Leopold, Hamrlik, Warrener, Regehr, Lydman, Ference, Phaneuf and Montador, what are Calgary gonna do?

Well on the radio they discussed Lydman as being a possible expendable guy now. I'm guessing he'll be made redundant by this signing. Montador may be borderline but I guess it's up to him to make it to the team.

How many defensemen and grinders can one team have?

I would think the Caps might be in the market for Lydman or any of the other D Men that might be losing a spot.

Sooo... why not just sign one of the many non-grinding forwards that were available? Plus I'd rather keep the group of defensemen that are there than trade one out and replace them with Hamrlik.

With Turek doubtful to come back, I'm not entirely sure Sutter is ready to go with a Kipper and Suave/Krahn duo.

I'm thinking Buffalo is also in the market to improve their blueline and they have an extra guy between the pipes. I could see a trade involving Lydman for Noronen.

well I'm not a HUGE fan of this (rumoured) signing...but Hamrlik has 6 40 point seasons under his belt...the Flames other 7 dman have ZERO between them

so he's an upgrade offensively over what they have. Sutter must feel that that's a void worth filling

now he can go and package say Lydman and Reinprecht (just to throw 2 names out there) for a pretty decent forward and be at budget

Or who knows...maybe the Flames will just ice

Regehr-Leopold
Hamrlik-Warrener
Lydman-Ference
Phaneuf-Montador

And only play 13 forwards?

I think this is a great signing. I have to say I have really become a fan of Sutter over the past year. That isn't saying much b/c I'm an Isle fan; so consider what I have to compare to.

But seriously, you can never have enough good d-man. There in such high demand that you can always find a team that you can trade an extra D for another roster need. In fact, I'd be willing to trade some Islander scoring for Calgary defense depth.

As for the salary, 3.5 is the going rate for an UFA Dman. But, you only have him for 2 years. That is a lot better than my own Isles with 4 years of Zhitnik or the flyers with Hatcher/Rathje.

As for Hamrlik, there is some concern that he may have slowed down with injuries (knee/shoulders). But again, at two years he should be fine. Especially, on a defense such as Calgary's where he won't have to carry as much of a burden as he did on the Isles.

Sutter knows what he's doing and the Flames are going to be all right!
