I think that is a key point to remember. Sutter had to overpay a little to get these guys locked up long term and to prevent them from becoming unrestricted free agents next summer. He effectively did this and kept the Flames relatively close to their self-imposed budget...

This deal is a little too, er, Rivet-esque for my liking.

Too much. I was hoping these players would sign for cheap so we could get that last trade/FA signing.

me too....if these guys would take a slight cut and make the team better, oh well I'd rather have Warrener than Dan McGillis for $2.2 million per year, so it could have been worse.

Warrrener has not played bad in the NHL. The last three teams he has been traded to have made the Stanley Cup finals in his first year. Two times is a coincidence, three times it is starting to become statistically significant.

Right now we sit at $30,187,000, Kobasew and Lombardi won't demand very much (lets say at max, 1.9 for the both of them) which puts them at 32 million. Toss in Nystrom with an entry level contract, so I don't see us over 32.5 when we have everyone we want re-signed. I wouldn't be surprised to see Calgary make one more trade.

No..the Flames are a tad above 32 million..you must include depth guys like Ritchie, Montador as well. Not sure where you are getting your numbers from...

Decent signing by Sutter, Warrner signed for market value. If he hit the UFA market I would suspect he would get similar dollars. The flames are solid at D but most of the players are young with the exception of Warrener and Lydman. Warrener is also a three time stanley cup finalist and that experiene can help mentor our young D.

It is a more than what I would have liked Sutter to sign him for but its better than Warrener in Minny, Nash or Columbus in a year.

Rhett W. gave up the opportunity to hit UFA status by signing this deal. So, the Flames had to pay him more than they would have paid a RFA.

I think it is a fair deal for both sides.

Calgary is rapidly becoming of the smarter organziations in hockey.
