Nash would be epic but If the Rangers add any top flight talent this off-season I believe it will be via free agency (Richards) or a star player will demand a trade.

I see a stopgap solution here. Sather loves these (Näslund, Zherdev, Frolov...) talented yet underproducing/aging reclamation projects.
Kreider hopefully would be ready to step in here 2012.

One of:
  • Prospal (knee is ?? - attitude is not)
  • Brunette (age? - but meshed with Gabby before)
  • Gagne (pricetag?)
On a one year deal.

Or dealing for:
Hemsky (for Wolski ++) - with only one year remaining at 4,1

Almost all the other proposed ideas here are David Crosby pipedreams - both regarding capspace and possibilities of acquiring without gutting the team. No GM will give up a young topline LW without a serious overpayment. None...

And we need to dump Drury to do any of this. Regarding Capt clutch --- where is Jeff Gillooly these days? ;-)

Eh Frolov anyone? He has talent, will come cheap and we won't have to give anything up. Should be considered.

Methinks people are going to be sorely disappointed. We'll be lucky to land Richards and people are already looking for his LW?

I think Dubinsky ends up with Richards(lets hope) and Gaborik

then they would have to find a winger for Anisimov and Callahan

If they keep Wolski he is the guy that will get the first crack and if he fails Zuke

Hemsky-Richards-Gaborik. I think Hemsky can make Richards a 30 goal guy-- easy.

However, you can have Hemsky play with Callahan if you want to spread the talent. Callahan likes to shoot, and Hemsky can set him up.

Dubinsky-Richards-Gaborik
Hemsky-Stepan/Anisimov-Callahan
Yes please.

have you guys even watched voracek regularly? he's so underwhelming.

he hasn't even sniffed the type of player the jackets thought they were drafting. that's why he and brassard are rumored to be available...

he's another player that can't produce in the bottom half of the line up and a guy that hasn't earned top 6 minutes yet. he also has absolutely no size. the kid gets pushed around all over the ice, especially in the corners. if you think he's a top 6 winger or even a top 3 winger, as of right now, you're dead wrong. he may eventually get there but it's not going to happen anytime soon.

from someone who lives in ohio and has seen voracek play regularly over the last couple of years, i'd pass.

do. not. want.

I want to dream big too! My nomination goes to Evander Kane! Rangers will trade their training facility to the Thrashers so they don't have to play in Winnipeg.

yep which is why I say keep Wolski and see what's out there. If they can fit someone else in I think a team would take Wolski for a pick and salary dump we can send to the minors if need be. Alla White this yr

I was going to add that I believe we'll see some big names moved around this off season. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part but I think a lot of teams that missed the playoffs will obviously want to improve and depending on what happens the remainder of the playoffs some teams that fall short might mix it up.

No one thinks Callahan would be a good fit on a Gaborik-Richards line?

Did you watch him play this year and look at his production? Should not even be considered for a second.

if you are gonna split up the line then dubinsky would by far be the best fit for that line. but i think most people are hoping that ??-richards-gaborik, dubinsky-anisimov-callahan would give us 2 really good lines.

i don't see any chance of him coming back...if he took a big paycut and was willing to sign for like $1.5 mil then i think you'd have to consider him as a depth guy but i think he'll go to the KHL first.

He's no Cory Perry, hell he's not even Milan Lucic.

Callahan is a great player, but not a first line player. Maybe if he pots 30 goals, maybe...

On an unrelated note, I threw Ovie out as a joke, obviously, but I can't believe some of the suggestions in this thread.

Dreaming is an understatement.

Frolov is gone. He had such an underwhelming season where he contributed with nothing, that I don't see him back at any price. Rangers grinding style doesn't fit him whatsoever.

The way I feel about Voracek now is the way I felt about Wolski 2 years ago. A young player already capable of 50 points that seems like a no miss for more with experience.

Yah, I mean, are the best options out there the "devils we know"? I can easily envision Frolov or Wolski hitting their career average numbers if they're on a line with a center better than the ones they played with this year. I'll add Prospal to the list as well.

Hemsky, that's an interesting one. He's on a very affordable salary, and superbly talented... But isn't he more of a playmaker than an actual goal scorer? I feel like we'd be better off landing another player that can put it in the net. Of course, if Hemsky is being sold off, there's no way I wouldn't want Sather to put in a bid.

That's a scary 1st line though... If Gaborik and Hemsky are making up 2/3rds of our main offensive line, we're going to have to learn to deal with injuries hurting the team.[/QUOTE]

we didnt already
No to Hemsky. Hes a supremely talented player but too many injuries, like Gaborik .

Really? Frolov is one of the best players in the league at board battling, IMO.

Not saying I want him back, but to say that he doesn't fit the team's general attack plan of grinding along the boards as much as possible doesn't make sense to me.

If we sign Richards and still have enough money to add another piece, I'd rather add an offensive dman rather than a LW. We have plenty of players who can play on the left side. None of them are legit 1st liners (Dubi is close), but we need an offensive dman more than we need a LW. No one knows if MDZ will bounce back next year. If he does, great. Having 2 PPQBs isn't a problem.

Assumptions:
1) Cap goes up to 62.2 mil
2) Buy out Drury and Wolski
3) Boogaard retires (If he doesn't, he takes MZA's spot or plays in Hartford)
4) Our RFAs/UFAs re-sign for the following:

Dubinsky: 4 years @ 3.85
Callahan: 4 years @ 3.8
Anisimov: 2 years @ 1.85
Sauer: 2 years @ 1.5
Boyle: 2 years @ 1.25
Gilroy: 2 years @ 1
Fedotenko: 1 year @ 1

5) UFA signings:

Richards: 6 years @ 6.5
Wiesniewski: 5 years @ 4

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Brandon Dubinsky ($3.850m) / Brad Richards ($6.500m) / Marian Gaborik ($7.500m)
Ruslan Fedotenko ($1.000m) / Artem Anisimov ($1.850m) / Ryan Callahan ($3.800m)
Carl Hagelin ($0.662m) / Derek Stepan ($0.875m) / Mats Zuccarello-Aasen ($1.750m)
Sean Avery ($1.937m) / Brian Boyle ($1.250m) / Brandon Prust ($0.800m)
Chris Drury ($3.716m) / Erik Christensen ($0.925m) /
Wojtek Wolski ($0.466m)

DEFENSEMEN
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Daniel Girardi ($3.325m)
Ryan McDonagh ($1.300m) / Mike Sauer ($1.500m)
Pavel Valentenko ($0.850m) / James Wisniewski ($4.000m)
/ Matt Gilroy ($1.000m)

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / Martin Biron ($0.875m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $62,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $60,583,334; BONUSES: $1,275,000
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): $1,616,666

That's a 22 man roster with enough money to bring up another forward if needed. Maybe MDZ makes the team over Gilroy or Valentenko. Maybe Grachev or Weise make it over Hagelin. Maybe Thomas makes it over MZA. Regardless, I think the numbers can work.
