Even Halak took 3.75 and he's 25. So I hope Vokoun realizes that goalies aren't what they used to be, in terms of money that is. ****, even Price got an extension at 2.75, but if he keeps up his play, he'll probably get 5M when he becomes a RFA.

What's interesting is teams seem to be consistently overpaying to keep their own goalies... if you look at what guys are getting before they go to market, it's out of line with what guys are getting on the market. Now, some of that is the guys getting re-signed are better than the guys on the market generally, but the division between them is too much.

What are you talking about? We got Leighton for a STEAL and he was re-signed!

I still believe it was a spur of the moment/panic move of retardation of Homer. Probably one of the worst signing this year, and yes, worse than Shelley.

It made the Shelley signing look like taking Datsyuk with the 171st pick :/

And I agree, he just completely panicked. It was kind of sad...

Tomas Vokoun is 34 yrs old. He turns 35 on July 2nd. If he signed with the Flyers on July 1 would it still be a 35+ contract?

Probably. I think he'd have to... maybe. Also, I think we'd only sign him for about 2 years probably right? At that point Bob would probably be our go to guy and Eriksson would be his back up.

This was discussed during the Pronger thing. If I am correct, the 35+ contract starts when the season begins, so if he is 35 by then (which is he) he will get a 35+ contract.

Shouldn't matter for Vokoun though. He's still elite, efficient and easy in the net. If Homer finally wants to give in it wouldn't surprise me to see him offer 3-4 years to get reduced cap hit. Age never seems to be a big concern for him.

i wouldnt call it panic...he pretty much had to re-sign the goalie who took us to the cup

(look i know leightons not good, but for all the flyers fans who arent hockey fans...he was too popular to let go)

((also, all of the talk of him + jeff reese was promising but obviously didnt pan out)

No he didn't... he tried to sign both Nabokov and Turco before he came back to Leighton.

the flyers will never, ever win the cup without a bona fide goalie.

if the flyers roll bob/leighton out next year it is going to be tough to watch.

vokoun, bryz, ANYONE. just give us a goalie we can call our number one.

I'd take Vokoun at 3 -4 million. My fear is that Homer overpays.

Regarding the Cap, is there room to pay 4 mil for a goalie without losing any of the current plays under contract?

It would be nice to see Leino stay, but if we are shelling out 4 mil for a goalie, I don't think they'll have room.

Well, it'll only be tough to watch in the playoffs. During the season I am sure they'll play just fine, so that Homer won't feel the need to upgrade.

Not entirely fair... I think there's reason to believe that Bob can develop into a true no. 1 in this league. Whether you want to roll the dice with him next year is another matter, but the thought process isn't the same ole same ole.

Do you think Vokoun would be put into a 1A 1B role with Bob?

I'd bet money if we lose Homer says Bob will be the starter for next season. And he once again will do nothing about the goalie situation.

Free agent options are really thin:
Vokoun
Bryzgalov

Goalies stuck behind big names:
Schneider
Rask
Lindback
Enroth(RFA)
Bernier
Harding

Vokoun would be my far and away #1 choice. The bottom names all have NHL experience but it's really a gamble unless you're trading for a Rask/Schneider.

I would say one of versteeg or carle would go. And seeing that holmgren went out and out this defense together last offseason i dont see him trading carle. But it would suck to have traded a first and third for versteeg to see him traded a few months later

wouldnt mind getting rask if bob is not going to be the future, but i doubt boston trades him since thomas is getting up there in age

For UFA, Vokoun for me. For the rest, I'd say Rask would be a great goalie to try to get, but I'm sure he'd replace Thomas, considering Thomas' age.

He'll be 23 next year... it isn't like he's THAT young in the grand scheme of development. Certainly has areas to improve, but he really isn't that far off from being extremely solid. Improved puck play would go a long way, and a few minor details will cut down a significant chunk of goals he gives up.

If you sign Vokoun, he isn't coming in to split duties.
