Niinimaki injured...

out 4-6 weeks with what I think is a shoulder separation, but the translator didn't really do a great job. If anyone knows finnish, or can find an online translator that works, here's the link:

It says that Niinimaki will be out 4-6 weeks. He was injured in the third period when a HIFK Player (un-named) checked him while in the offensive zone.

There was no penalty called on the play as the ref did not think the hit was illegal, but there will be a further investigation in to the play by the higher ups.

And it's a shoulder injury? That sucks so much.

According to Prendergast tonight after the game:

"It's a BROKEN shoulder."

"Not a seperation or a dislocation?" I (GuyF) asked.

"No. According to his agent, it's BROKEN". - KP repeated.

4-6 weeks... sounds like a bad place to break bones. This is why they want him to bulk up so bad. He's too small, or as KP described... "He's boney".

Hmm, they've been talking about dislocation here in Finland, so I guess mr. Prendergast (or his agent, or both) were wrong.

In the Jatkoaika.com recap (in Finnish), the physician of Ilves says that his shoulder got dislocated and because it's a muscular athlete we're talking about, it couldn't be pulled back to it's right location, so he'll miss 4-6 weeks.

I only saw a short clip on the TV last night and it to me it looked like a pretty normal contact situation, except that Mikko Turunen (the HIFK player) used his hands a little (should've got a penalty for that, might still be suspended but shouldn't IMO) and Niinimäki did what no player should ever do: stopped 1 ½ metres away from the boards. He was obviously in great pain and skated straight to the dressing room holding his limp arm (and throwing his helmet to the ice on the way).

I'll post a link to a video clip once MTV3 gets it online.

OK. I hope you're right. Don't kill the messanger though, I'm just saying what I was told.

Turns out the injury was far worse than they imagined and requires a surgery. His season is pretty much over, the estimated recovery period is five months. He managed to gather three goals and three assists in ten games before the accident.

I would have to say that is NOT GOOD

Here's to hoping he completely recovers from this,

Jesse 'Mr. Glass' Niinimaki

Man, is he made of balsa wood or something??

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery, but since we'll likely not have hockey next year anyway he should have all the recovery time in the world.

According to the Ilves.com website there are no damaged nerves, so there should be no risk of permanent damage. It's "just" a dislocated shoulder, no broken bones or anything.

I finally got confirmation from Kevin Prendergast on this situation this morning.

"Out 4-5 months. They inserted a screw to repair the broken shoulder".

Not good. As "EH" said earlier... season's over for Niinimaki.

That sucks. 6 points in 10 games is a very promising start for him.

Knew it.. It was reported on a Finnish site that it was 5 months. Sucks in either case.

That seriously SUCKS! Maybe in the long run it will be good as it will show him that he HAS to bulk up and it won't be a two year wait for him to come over then another couple years wait for him to bulk up and get used to the N.A. game....
