Just figured I would share this with you all. I stopped into my friend's store that he has, he sells NHL jerseys, other sports too, but has alot more NHL then anything else, he does the lettering too for people who want a jersey made up rather then just buying one already done. Anyway, I was discussing with him about jersey changes for next season, he showed me the reebok catalog ordering book he gets and the Kings, Predators, Panthers and Lightning(already unveiled) are all getting new home and aways, while the Sens, Thrashers, Penguins are all getting new alternates. Anyway, getting side tracked, the Islanders are getting a third jersey and he said the jersey will be Black. Apparently they made up 5 different proto-types and all 5 were black jerseys. I was kind of suprised because the Islanders dont have any black in their team colors, so I am kind of afraid that it could be awful.
I think the only Third that makes sense is one that incorporates Long Island diagonally instead of a crest. Honestly I'm not sure if I'm too hot on that idea either.
I actually never hated the Orange from 8 years ago but they shouldn't bring that back.
Living in LA, I commented recently to a Kings fan, that I hate the fact that the Kings are going to use their black 3rd jerseys as their regular home jerseys next year. I told him that black jerseys have become such a cliche and there's nothing original about them.
I love the idea of a 3rd jersey, but please, not in black!!!
The ONLY way i'll let a black jersey fly is if we go all Halloween on the lighthouse n have a creepy full moon in the background. I actually wanted to design something like this but have no artistic ability.
Can we actually see the jersey before declaring it a massive failure?
Blue has been done, Orange didn't work, what colors are left? Aquamarine? Something like Red, Yellow, or Green? I'd rather they try something new than give the same old Navy Blue with orange and white armstripes as our third jersey.

When I first read the thread title I knew there would be the typical bashing without first seeing the product.
But if it is mainly Black my optimism has been muted. I would prefer vibrant colours (loved the Wave jersey - not the Fisherman logo). Not a fan of the Pumpkin.
However, when I first saw the SENS third jersey up close on a mannequin I thought it was pretty sweet. So may be it will work.
Let's just be patient with this Islander innovation. We rushed to judgment on all the other innovations unfairly (8th seed playoffs, 10/15 year deals, etc.) and it would be nice if we gave this a chance.
My idea has always been to have the 3rd jersey look like a beach. The logo would be a lighthouse. The bottom stripe should be a less bright burnt-orange (the beach, and the lighthouse logo would sit just on top of this). The next stripe would be ocean blue (the ocean - duh). The main body of the jersey would be a lighter sky blue (sky), and the shoulder panel/top of the jersey would be white (clouds).
Teams that have black jerseys or used black for 3rd jerseys: Philly (3rd), Boston, Pitt, TB, Carolina (3rd), Ottawa (3rd), Vancouver, San Jose (3rd), Anaheim (3rd), Phoenix (3rd), Los Angeles (3rd), Chicago(3rd), Dallas (3rd), Calgary(3rd).
I think team colors are as much a part of an organization's identity as their logo. The Islanders orange, blue and white are their colors and they shouldn't deviate from them. Black became trendy back in the glory days of the Raiders, and then any team without imagination would incorporate black into their color scheme. New fanchises used black in their uniforms and other teams added a black jersey or hat.
