Ryan Malone to PHX

Whats it take from Phoenix?

Now, I am not sure how expandable he is in Tampas point of view. Just trying to gauge what would it take from Phoenix to acquire him.

He's one of our very few gritty forwards that bring the extra toughness we lack and a good locker room guy. Tough to trade a guy like Malone. However, what would it take to get Yandle?

Tampa would need a roster player back to slot into Malone's spot

since they'd obv be downgrading that position the extra incentive should come from a prospect/pick.

Then Tampa's reason to make the deal is to get that cap space + some futures. Use that cap space to re-sign players and sign UFAs and then hope the futures pan out. Malone is good but replaceable from Tampa's view.

What does Phoenix have in terms of prospects? Obviously OEL/Turris etc., are off the table but how about second grade prospects? And what forward would be going back to fill Malone's spot? Pyatt?

NMC, actual salary declines from previous seasons and drop offs significantly after next season, TB still in the playoffs. I can't see the Light asking RM to waive his NMC.

Since it's been rumored that Shane Doan isn't thrilled by the possibility of going back to Winnipeg (if the Coyotes leave for Winnipeg), that could be an option.

Since Malone is being discussed here, what would it take for the Avs to get him (his cousin recently signed an deal with Avs).

Glad you added the emphasis.

Sounds like TBL would covet a guy like Malone for the same reasons PHX would. But is there a point when Malone becomes a cap liability for the Lightning?

With Stamkos needing to be re-signed for the upcoming season Lightning going to have some cap issues unless they plan to spend close to the cap. If cap goes to ~$62M, <$26M available to sign 12 players (including Stamkos).

Cap not an issue for Phoenix, so Malone's $4.5M for 4 years (but $3.375M due in salary for those 4 years) is exactly the kind of contract Maloney looks for here.

So, take Yandle off the table and what are we looking at? Is Malone's value higher than say a Kubina or Ohlund? And, if so, does it make more sense for the Lightning to take less for the D-men for cap space than it does for the higher return you could get for Malone?

God, I love this time of the year.

While true that Doan is not thrilled at the prospect of Winnipeg it's because of his family. If he asks for a trade I assume it would be to San Jose, LA, Anaheim, Colorado or Dallas. All are a short flight home to PHX. When his contract expires at the end of the 2011-12 season, then I think everything is on the table.

One of the worst things about this whole PHX fiasco -- are we moving, are we not? -- has been on the players and their families. Especially guys like Doan, Morris, Jovo, Aucoin, and Whitney who have NTCs or NMCs.

As for Colorado I would think a good young NHL forward like Galliardi or Jones and a solid C prospect like Olver would be a great start. But a caveat: ONLY if the Coyotes are moving. If they stay in PHX, Doan goes nowhere.

Malone is one of the few forwards on the Lightning's top six that crashes the net and provides grit and scoring ability. Downie is a poorer version of Malone. Tampa would need a highhh price for him.

Kubina and Ohlund haven't really helped as much as Malone has, like by a ton. Malone is probably the 4th most important forward after MSL, Stamkos, Vinny and it's not like there's a significant jump between the 4, he really helps TBL out.

Well what do you think about JM Liles (1 year left on his contract) + mid level prospect. If you guys trade for him you could keep him, and basically see what would happen with Yandle, and what kind of a contract he would be offerd when he hits RFA status, and how many compensatory picks would you get as a result if you don't match the offer. Or you could dump Liles at the trade deadline (if you keep Yandle), and clear your cap space before the new CBA starts.
