Jim Schoenfeld on NYR plans

Jim Schoenfeld spoke today in Hartford about the Rangers plans. He discussed the Rangers adding two or three elite pieces. They won't acquire them in one off-season. Discussed trading assets. Trade one or two assets. The Rangers have enough depth of youth where they can trade to fill holes without hurting the core. Trading a forward prospect,a #1 pick and maybe something else for an elite player entering the last season of his contract. Rangers are holding their organizational meetings next week in La Quinta,California.

Begins at 28 minutes

Why would they trade all that for someone entering the last year of their contract?!?!?!

I have a feeling they are going to target Hemsky this offseason.

Maybe feel that they could be had for cheaper and they'll just lock them up with a new contract themselves after?

Just by the way that was phrased I really do think that they are going hard after AH.

Hemsky? He is an elite player? Gaborik is more durable than Hemsky.

Sometimes I regret even posting this stuff.

If the hockey gods do have mercy on us, Hemsky-Richards-Gaborik for 82 games is a pretty great top line.

I think when healthy he is arguably an elite player. Isn't around a PPG player, if not more so.

Sounds like Brad Richards and another elite forward to me. But seriously, what "elite" forwards are out there going into their contract year next season? I'm really not opposed to this plan at all. We have done a great job at drafting, not all can make the team. You have extra assets use them. Just dont trade Thomas, Kreider, or Hagelin. I love those guys.

Hemsky? Really? WTF is wrong with you people? I wouldnt mind getting Hemsky but no way is he worth what we would have to give up in order for him to play 40 games in a season.

How about we go after someone else that isnt injury prone

The only thing that holds Hemsky back from being elite is that he makes Gaborik look like Dan Girardi when it comes to injuries.

Most GM's will testify that the salary cap has made wheeling and dealing pretty difficult/tricky in the post-lockout NHL. In theory it works, but in reality it's much harder to hunt down a favorable deal.

Well the problem is that these are the players teams are going to be asking for if they're trading us anything of value.

Just from a quick glance at capgeek's UFA for 2012 the only names that really stand out at even being above average would be Doan, Hemsky, Sharp, Smyth, or Penner.

Penner...DO NOT WANT.

Smyth and Doan are obviously older, but I would love to see Doan in a NYR uniform. Same goes for Sharp, but there's a snowball's chance in hell that happens.

Hemsky would be great for us, but he's always injured too. That glass line someone joked about could come true: Hemsky-Richards-Gaborik. But, when healthy, could arguably be the most skilled line in the league.

Hemsky and Doan are the only real players I see us targeting. Hopefully more Doan than Hemsky. He's a man possessed in the playoffs and steps up big time. Smyth would fit into our grinding style of play perfectly, so for one year I wouldn't mind giving him a shot either.

But I see Doan or Hemsky as the realistic options from the potential 2012 UFA's.

I agree, itl be Brad Richards and an elite LW,

Patrick Sharp, Alex Hemsky, Dustin Penner, Shane Doan, Alex Semin... Brent Burns and Ryan Suter are all UFAs..

Chris Stewart, James Neal, JVR, John Tavares, Jamie Benn, Evander Kane are RFA's

Hemsky, Suter and Burns are the only UFAs i'd be interested in next year. Sharp doesn't make it to UFA. Suter and possibly Burns don't either.

I'm very confident that the same will happen in 2013. Most sexy FA's will be resigned.

I don't think anyone said they wanted Hemsky. They were just speculating that the Rangers would target him...

Personally, I'm not that big of a fan. He's supremely talented, but he's made of glass. He's a first line player when healthy, but he's not healthy often enough to really make a difference.

#1 Center, PMD/PPQB Defenseman, and top-6 winger.

We could get two this offseason and pick up one at deadline. If we get the right pieces to fill those holes we could contend as soon as next year.

Sign Richards and trade for a puck moving RD or a 1L LW this offseason. Cup is ours.

Alex Semin is the only person who fits the bill as 'elite', and still debatably so. But how could they *possibly* hope to fit his $6.75M cap hit?

And as for defensemen, there's just Brent Burns and Ryan Suter. Two players who are on two teams that probably won't let either player go for the world.

JS. "We have 4-5 good young 2nd/3rd line center ice men, 20-21yo and maybe you package one with a pick and something else to get that elite player in the final year of his contract."

God I hope he's not thinking Stepan.
