Does GMGM get the axe after this years performance?
I thought he was made of 100% teflon after the TDL, but now there may be some chinks in the armor where you could legitimately call for his head.
I myself am undecided.

He's hired three stiff coaches in a row (BB to a lesser extent) so there comes a time when the finger is going to be pointed at him and NOW is that time. I get the feeling he stays but on a short leash as in:
"You better get the right guy this time...or else".

In a word, no. I think regular season success is a mark of talent, while playoff success is a mark of goaltending and coaching. X's and O's, leadership, motivation, stability. Ted knows the talent is there, knows that we have 3 young and talented goalies (of whom, mark my words, one of them will be a stud), and recognizes the next logical step.

No but if he fully embraces Boudreau once again then, yeah, I'll have had my fill of him. It's going to be very difficult to remake this roster this summer and tougher still to change their mentality sufficiently with the same coaching staff.
McPhee is the root of the problem. He is a second tier manager. After another year of this suffering you still want George McPhee as your pilot? Amazing.
The Washington Capitals fan base lacks self-esteem. You're happy to take whatever mediocrity they throw at you. Raise your standards, people!
Clean house. Fire McPhee. He was a tool in Vancouver and he has a fraudulent team in Washington.
That team reminds me so much of the 2003 Vancouver Canucks. So much offensive talent, but unable to play a team that has an established system and good goaltending. Also chock full of soft players that can't elevate their game in the playoffs. If anyone would take them, I'd deal Semin and Backstrom. I'd also go out and for once, get a decent goaltender. Why Washington did not pay the price for Roloson is enough reason, in my opinion to fire McPhee.
Not sure its GMGM's fault that the players can't score more than the other team. He brought up Boudreau and it looked good for a while, until we all realized that the regular season means squat for teams that make the playoffs year after year. GMGM has amassed world class talent here, he just put together the team improperly. He should let go of Boudreau, let some young guys take a crack at the lineup, and retool his whole blueline around Carlzner Wideman and Hannan. Keep Erskine for transition and toughness, and let the rest walk. And for the love of god get a coach that holds players accountable for defensive gaffs or risky decision-making. TedLeo has a few years left to enjoy his quality drafting (goalies, Orlov and Kuz) but should tell GMGM his job is gone if they don't make the ECF next year.

And how has he 'failed' for so long? Because he hasn't won a Cup? You do realize that there are only 6 GMs that have won a Cup.
Just stop with the excuses....pro sports is about winning. After he got swept in the Finals with a team he inherited and tweaked nicely, what exactly has he done to even get CLOSE to winning a championship?
Yes he's drafted nicely for the last 5 years since he lucked into Ovy. That Ovy gift was the only thing that saved him long ago....essentially...that was his lotto ticket.
Look, I'm not sure I support he really be fired now, but I'm also not a mindless company man who can't see what's in front of my eyes...
1) if Bruce stays, GMGM's future is tied to Bruce's for next year and they both go if it doesnt work.
2) if Bruce goes, GMGM stays and refines his search for a coach.
GMGM has gotten better at everything during his tenure.
He is now responsible for brilliant drafting, good trading for the most part and doesnt make knee jerk reactions.
Bruce was a brilliant choice for coach. No one can deny that.
This on the back of 2 bad choices, again, ever improving.
The next head coach selection he makes (and he should), will define his time at Washington or end it.

I don't necessarily agree with all of his arguments, but I would say that I personally believe that GMGM deserves little of the respect he gets for his generally excellent drafting since 2003.
In my mind, the expansion of the scouting and Ross Mahoney deserve most of the credit. In fact, I recall reading somewhere (Though, I will admit I cannot find the source material again) that McPhee basically admitted that he drafted who the scouts advised him to. However, I will admit that it is difficult to find teams that have drafted better then the Capitals in recent years.
I don't think GMGM is the best, but he sure isn't anywhere near the bottom. The club has flaws, but GM isn't really one.
If you're ripping his drafting (which is borderline insane) you can't throw out Messier and not look like a bozo. What does he know about picking players? McPhee actually has shown to be quite good assembling prospects and talent from the backend of the first.
I don't even think his future is tied to the next coach.
What has he really bungled beyond repair?
He's put talent on the ice. Everyone in hockey feels there's talent assembled. We needed veteran leadership, he got it. Whatever the club seemed to need, he went out and got.
The club is flush with prospects, they're a young team, and frankly, there's zero chance Ted jettisons him.
Some of you guys should really see what it's like to root for a team with a bad GM. McPhee isn't the problem with this hockey team.
