I forgot how much the offseason sucks on HF
Not a firesale but I think it would be in Washington's best interest to offer up a "sacrificial lamb;" whether that be Semin, or Backstrom, or Green remains to be seen.

I'm glad YOU think it will be in Washington's best interest to deal a "sacrificial lamb."

I think it will be in Washington's best interest to keep their main core players and build around them.

Out opinions wash out and the only one that matter is what Washington wants to do, not what we speculate.

That's why we have these discussion boards: To offer one's opinion.

Washington has been displeased with Semin for a long time now: I don't think it would be that far fetched to believe Washington may have inquired about what they would be able to attain for Semin alone.

There are only a minute few in the league who are considered to be "immovable," and the only one I see from Washington's camp that fits that to a T is Ovechkin.

If a team is willing to offer a nice package for either Semin, Backstrom, or Green, why would Washington not want it?

They were so displeased in fact that they signed him again to a 1 year deal.

Teams inquire about top players all the time, and I'm not arguing that they are immovable. I am saying that nobody is going to come along to blow Washington away to the point where they could possibly screw up their chances next year of being at the top again.

Again, logistically this is a top team, it makes absolutely no sense for them to trade an integral part of their team and go into a partial rebuild when next year they will be near the top of the conference again. They are only going to make a few semi-minor moves to add to their depth, that's it.

This isn't a fantasy league where since the team didn't meet expectations they blow it up, it's a good team that's still a couple of secondary pieces away.

A player who has been known to want X amount of years for Y amount of dollars and Washington still has not offered it to him.

This is has been a top team for two years running now and all they have showed for it is a 1st and 2nd round exit. The same team that has had success before in the regular season but have only showed success against the lowly Rangers and bowing out to the likes of the Flyers and Penguins. And during those runs, they also were able to attain a few players here and there that were supposed to help the team.

It's been more than evident that these "high caliber" players bend when it comes to the playoffs. It'd be better to see what they can get and there will be teams lining up for their services in a heartbeat.

If anyone goes, it will be Semin. Backstrom will be staying. Green will likely as well.

I would bet on Semin being traded sometime before the end of next season though.

Reading into comments from GMGM and Leonsis, it doesn't sound as if they'll be making any major moves.

If they're fully committed to their new system, I think they should consider moving Semin.

That I understand.

But board-wide these proposals for Backstrom, Green, Neuivirth are simply ludicrous.

Yeah, I agree. Particularly Backstrom.

I think they'll move Varlamov.

Yea, he really serves no purpose now since it appears that they want to go with Neuvy first and Holtby second.

I don't think Semin will be half the player he is capable of being if he leaves Washington. He's incredibly talented, but he's the kind of guy where I think you have to question his effort level.

Very Kovalev-esque, imo.

Varlamov might consider bolting to the KHL.

that probably has more to do with role on a team.

He gets a starting job, he'll stay, if not, he bolts

The KHL thing with him is due to the fact that he's feeling forced out. He thinks he should be a starter somewhere, or at least split time.

If he was moved to a team that would give him the starting job, I think there's no question he'd stay.

Marc Staal has hands of stone. He will never be an offensive force. In fact he's offensive when he tries to go on the offense. He needs to play a bit more tougher in his own end. He's turning into a taller version of Rod Seiling.

I have been happy with his increasing offensive capabilities as he learns when to jump up into the play.

He had like 4 goals or so 2 years ago, and had 9 last year. I really do think 12-15 is not out of question.

I am not calling on him to be an offensive force but he does have some nice moves every once and a while.

For the offensive-defenseman that this team needs, I really hope it's Del Zotto. Hope that he's benefited from his time off from the league, and I really hope this was nothing but a sophomore slump.

I think people are not using the word "terrible" correctly. Marc-Andre Bergeron is "terrible". Matt Gilroy is "terrible". Jeff Schultz is "terrible". Mike Green is "below average". Although he CAN play well defensively when he wants to. I would take his gaffes with the insane amount of skill he has.

Well if he realizes that he needs to change his game some and not do the same pass where everyone in their mothers know where it's going I think he can get back to normal.

That's the difference between good and average players. Good players are able to change their games so they aren't as predictable. MDZ expected he could do the same things he did in his first year and get away with people not expecting it, and that's not true--the league changed their gameplan with him.

Also, he needs to hit the damn net from the point
