Why does Stamkos have to play without St. Louis to be considered great when Malkin plays quite a bit with Crosby and when he doesn't he benefits from the other team having to worry about Crosby?

Malkin doesn't really play much w/ Sid:

15.05% EV 24 COOKE,MATT - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI - 25 TALBOT,MAXIME
13.23% EV 87 CROSBY,SIDNEY - 14 KUNITZ,CHRIS - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI
7.17% EV 45 ASHAM,ARRON - 24 COOKE,MATT - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI
6.24% EV 9 DUPUIS,PASCAL - 14 KUNITZ,CHRIS - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI
5.23% EV 87 CROSBY,SIDNEY - 9 DUPUIS,PASCAL - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI
4.41% EV 19 COMRIE,MIKE - 10 LETESTU,MARK - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI
3.33% EV 24 COOKE,MATT - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI - 11 STAAL,JORDAN
2.97% EV 48 KENNEDY,TYLER - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI - 11 STAAL,JORDAN
2.94% EV 19 COMRIE,MIKE - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI - 26 TANGRADI,ERIC
2.9% EV 87 CROSBY,SIDNEY - 71 MALKIN,EVGENI

That's ~24% of the time w/ Sid. He plays mostly w/ Talbot and Cooke.

On the other hand Stammer plays with:

32.41% EV 9 DOWNIE,STEVE - 26 ST. LOUIS,MARTIN - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
11.72% EV 6 MALONE,RYAN - 26 ST. LOUIS,MARTIN - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
10.63% EV 4 LECAVALIER,VINCENT - 26 ST. LOUIS,MARTIN - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
5.42% EV 9 DOWNIE,STEVE - 12 GAGNE,SIMON - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
3.53% EV 26 ST. LOUIS,MARTIN - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
3.5% EV 12 GAGNE,SIMON - 26 ST. LOUIS,MARTIN - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
3.06% EV 19 MOORE,DOMINIC - 26 ST. LOUIS,MARTIN - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
2.93% EV 16 PURCELL,EDWARD - 26 ST. LOUIS,MARTIN - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
2.16% EV 18 HALL,ADAM - 26 ST. LOUIS,MARTIN - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
1.79% EV 6 MALONE,RYAN - 16 PURCELL,EDWARD - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN
1.76% EV 26 ST. LOUIS,MARTIN - 91 STAMKOS,STEVEN - 42 TYRELL,DANA

Stammer plays ~70% of the time w/ MSL.

This^; with current health up in the air it is closer, edge to Stamkos, assuming Malkin gets to within ball park of himself.

gotta go with Malkin, i just feel he can make something out of nothing. hes able to take over a game by himself on a regular basis. he doesnt have much to work with playing on a 2nd line with no wingers imagine what hed do with some solid wingers. i dont feel that Stamkos is capable of that. just for the sake of argument i think if you put stamkos on pghs 2nd line and put malkin with st louis/downie/malone ect... i think hed put up godly numbers

I'd have to give it to Stamkos. His first season was stunted by poor coaching so I don't even count it. I consider him to be by far one of the best in the league and would take him over Malkin in a heart beat, he's still young and could improve. I love Malkin but I'd definitely go for Stamkos at this point.

How is Malkin's health up in the air? Knee injuries are not career-threatening like they used to be and in some cases the player's leg feels a bit stronger, I don't know why people continue to ignore this. Before the Tampa/Pittsburgh series was even over he was skating mildly and said he would've liked to give it a go if the Penguins made it to the 3rd round. Tell me how that doesn't translate to him being ready to roll for training camp.

did you watch him when crosbie went down ? there are only 3 players in the top tier- ovi, crisbie and Malkin

Don't disagree but if I'm going after Stamkos it's because I'm trying to build a solid team around him. Not looking for a player to do everything on his own. I get what you're saying though, Stamkos you believe relies on his linemate's more than Malkin does.

Hard to argue against that but I'd roll the dice on Stamkos.

Malkin disappears? The Art Ross and Conn Smythe say otherwise. He's a guy that rises to the ocassion during the big games, not shys away from it.

And there needs to be a sticky somewhere saying Malkin didn't need surgery on his ACL and MCL. Just the former. He'll be back to full health by training camp and hopefully remain that way for awhile. Geno will probably have his best linemates since Malone and Sykora next season. No lineups are set in stone yet obviously but I expect him to be amongst the elite once again next season.

And for the record: Malkin > Stamkos

as long as hes got all that help he will continue to be underrated. the best or worst thing that could happen to stamkos image around the league would be a long term injury to one or more of Tampas stars to see how he handles being the main focus. but im sure your content with him being underrated if thats what its gonna take.

If you didn't take into account injuries like the OP suggested, and both were playing at the top of their games I would take Malkin.

Malkin is more of a complete player with not only goal-scoring ability but also very good playmaking skills. I don't see Stamkos in that playmaking level yet.

However Malkin hasn't been as good when he was healthy they last 2 years or so and that may sway me to pick Stamkos.

Give St Louis to Malkin then we see who is better. I'll take Malkin because he can carry his own line with 2 4th line players, Stamkos needs St Louis.

His 36 point Conn Smythe says differently. Before that 22 points in 20 games. Yep, he dissapears alright.

If Malkin can get back to his 2007-09 form the only player in the league i would take over him is Crosby.

Let's hope we get the 2007-2009 Malkin and 2010 Crosby back.
