As for Leino; I see him taking the hits and not backing down in his play... He will go out there each shift, no matter the opponent on the ice, and do what he has to do to control the puck and play, as well as deter the other team from doing so... Is a a glove dropper? Certainly not, but IMO toughness is not defined by that... HEART is what determines toughness to me, and many a fighter does not really have the heart to make sure their team comes back from 0-3 goals after 0-3 games... And toughness in a skilled player is paramount in this League... Briere and Giroux were pointed out as tough on their skates; they are also players that take hits and get up and don't lose a step, and they are players that push back in any way they can while being unevenly matched up with most opponents... It is hard to knock them off and out of their game... and personally I wouldn't want to get Briere pissed off and then face him again on the ice; he has a real nasty streak in hi little body... same goes for Kimmo and his diminutive frame.

... And Zerdev, if you watch him, will take the hits and give the nasty shots and put his glove in opponents faces... he is just not considered a fighter, but he will do whatever it takes to better his chances of scoring a goal.

I have no concerns whatsoever with this teams toughness... and it doesn't bother me that they are not the reincarnation of the Broad Street Bullies... they have the heart the BSB had, IMO... There is really no weakness in that regards, and there is die in this dog in a fight.
Your last statement sums it up. I also "have no concerns whatsoever with this teams toughness". To me, you look at the guys you lean on to define team toughness. They don't get any tougher than Richards/Pronger. This team has the heart and never back down attitude to contend with ANYONE. I see zero reason to think otherwise.

P.S. I also agree on Leino and Zherdev. I was just giving them as the "ok, maybe one or two" - but I love Leino's game. Anyway, not an issue in my book.

In Re your PS; I got ya... I just thought I'd expand on them a bit there.

Over the years the Flyers have rarely if ever signed or dealt for or drafted a 'soft' player... Even their skilled small guys who were more noted for skill than for their roughness could hold their own and never shied away from poking their noses into places when that was what was needed. I had no idea when they obtained the rights for Timonen that he was such a tough little guy... I had thought he was more of a paper captain... I understood his ability as a D-man, but never understood his edge and resolve and willingness to put his small frame in harms way... nor his toughness in staying out there when he is a marked player and banged around. Kimmo is a perfect example of what a Flyers player should be; not a stereotypical Flyer but one that the Organization seek out.

Briere also took me by surprise... He takes care of his business and gains space that some smaller players never get by having a nasty edge that is lost with many fans who watch the team. Unfortunately he does pay the price to the officials to gain that room.

Zherdev also surprised me with that little edge he plays with... his game is overshadowed on a team such as the Flyers, a team that is expected to have real goons patrolling the ice... Watch Nic to see his edge... No, he isn't looked at as a tough player, but he holds his own and is by no means soft... I;m thinking that Homer knew this before he decided to roll the dice on him; had he been soft, the Flyers would have let him slide by without getting a sniff, no matter his snipping talent and more than fair contract price.

Thing is that the Flyers do have roles for their players and they do look out for each other... They may not be the big and bad players that other editions have been, but they certainly are tough enough and contain no soft spots that I can detect.

Downie went a little insane tonight. Guess Tampa hasn't completely reformed him.

Haha, well he was getting a bit physical with refs again.

10min misconduct after he refused to go to the penalty box, was sent to the dressing room, but just recently came back to sit in the box.

This is pushing it to the limit but...

Downie reminds me of the kind of guy who will kill someone by the time he's 40, completely coked out of it of course.

It was that kind of crap that always bothered me about him... that more than the actual game play penalties... the extra curricular calls. It is to me a sign of some with an uncontrollable problem... or should I say a problem with self control. I actually liked his game, but I feel he is much more trouble than he is worth... and as was said by somebody before, he'd be definitely cooked as a Flyer.

I've seen other teams spiral downward a lot harder and faster.

Paul Holmgren: Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Seriously the last time this thread was bumped was to praise Holmgrens work.

I'll reserve my thoughts untill after he makes his summer moves.

Following his trends of recent years of completely overcompensating in whatever area the team semms weakest, in I expect this team to start next season with Lundqvist in net

I guess it's only natural for fans to overreact after these four games, within a few days people will calm down.

Hello Bob Clark what should I do !

Relax Paul Uncle Ed will take care of it, or we will just play some reruns of 1975 cup days. The fans will forget all about this year

This bump was tongue in cheek. It's not as bad as I thought it was last offseason, but it's still not good.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure every realist on this board called this in the end. Bob was a nice surprise, but made no difference. The team being assy didnt help either.

I think it's the consensus at TSN that says Holmgren has done a good job.

The only questions they ask is if he inquired at all about Halak last season.

They couldn't match what the Blues gave up.
