Should the Rangers Sign Simon Gagne If They Sign Brad Richards?

If we land Richards, many here have proposed the idea of signing Simon Gagne to fill the first line left wing position. Gagne in his current expiring contract has a $5.25 million cap hit and is 31. He tallied just 17 goals this season, but has averaged a solid 23 goals over his 11 year career, twice cracking the 40 goal mark with 47 is 05'-06' and 41 in 06'-07'.

Gagne is clearly an offensively talented player, and with Richards I say he could net around thirty or so pretty confidently. We may be able to take advantage of his age and his less than average contract year and sign him for a little cheaper than his current cap hit. Thoughts?

If it weren't for health consistency, or lack there of, I would say hell yeah.

If he wouldn't get hurt, I'd take him...but he would get hurt.

I hate to sound mean here but...seriously?

The injuries are the exact reason why I'd pass.

He'd just cost cash, not youth, and might even be had for cheap with high upside. So yes, I'm serious.

When talking about 1st liners & Top D-men, you need guys who are up to the challenge physically as much as anything else & can handle the grind of the schedule. And Gagne doesn't have that anymore.

If he's cheap, I'd be open to it. Only problem is, he's been bit by an injury bug.

i get what your saying but id much rather send that same amount of money to jussi jokinen, hes finally put it together and would be a very talented young forward that can play top 6 minutes.

No, I don't want someone that can't play a full season for the life of him.

We already have one of those.

I'd do it for a year. If it's just cash, which it is, it is something you must consider, and I am certain that has crossed Sather's mind. I thought the Frolov signing was genius, but it didn't work out, which is fine.

If Gagne signs for a year, scores a bunch and stays healthy, WIN.

If Gagne signs for a year, scores a little and then gets injured and gets put on the IR for the rest of the year, freeing up a spot for a prospect or someone else, WIN.

If Gagne signs for a year, plays really well, and the Rangers trade him come deadline... WIN!

I can't see them having room for any other UFA. Richards I would love but after that keep the core intact and go with the youth

no need for Gagne, rather take a cheap Prospal back if he fits

If he'll take a cheap, one-year deal, it's worth considering. Not anything for multiple years though.

No chance that it could work. Even if the Rangers somehow find a way to bury the Drury, Wolski and Avery contracts, they'll still be going after Richards, along with re-signing and giving substantial raises to Dubinsky, Boyle, Callahan and Anisimov.

Not sure where everyone gets the idea that the Rangers can get around the cap. It'll be hard enough getting Richards in here.

I wouldn't go after Gagne anyway, his head is like Gaborik's leg.

Yeah I'd take him if he comes cheap. Gagne-Richards-Gaborik is one hell of a top line.

Uhh... cap?

We can barely fit Richards in. How are we supposed to fit Gagne in? Doubt he signs for less than 3.5M. Probably 4 on a 1 yr deal.

This is just wrong, if the Rangers buyout Drury and Wolski, Keep Zucc and MDZ in the minors and waive EC and Boogard then demote them (which is all plausible) we can not only sign Richards, but add a Gagne if he comes on the cheaper side and a puck moving d-man like Pitkanen.

The cap is expected to go up to 62.2 million at least. Here's an example of how we can sign Richards, Gagne, and Pitkanen.

17 goals and 23 assists on and aging player with injury issues... who is giving him $4 million for 1 year? 3.5 is the top amount I can see him getting, i can easily see him taking a 1 year deal for $3 million from Tampa, its just a matter of if he would come here for that same offer if they didn't give him a number he likes down there. Some posters here believe he will re-sign with Tampa, however I see him as a player Sather would love to get to play with Gaborik and Richards and that scares me a little.

Gagne is done as a significant player.

Absolutely not.

Not only that, but Gagne is out because of yet ANOTHER concussion. He's listed as an upper body injury, but if anyone saw the hit and how he laid on the ice after laning you would know it's a concussion and the thing is, he didn't get hit in the head. It was a hard body check along the glass that did it.

A stiff jolt to the body is now causing his concussions much like the one that cause Lindros when he hit the sharks player years ago.

Gagne is more likely to retire this summer than sign with anyone.

If we get Richards I'd rather sign Tanguay or Jussi Jokinen for the money involved. Although I can see Jokinen going back to Carolina

agreed on both accounts.

Both players would be better options than Gagne

No interest in tanguay, our ufa wish list should be as such

1- Richards
2- pitkanen
3- jokinen
4- if we can't get jokinen I'd bring back prospal
5 - if prospal retires and we can't get jokinen then I'd bring in brunette on a 1 year deal

Gagne is a player i can really see sather going after, if gagne was willing to come on the cheap and I mean cheap I'd consider it, however I doubt gagne would come here on the cheap which is a reason why jokinen is the best lw option once we lock up Richards first and foremost

Assuming Tampa is interested in keeping him, I am curious why Gagne would want to leave Tampa? He said he would only lift his trace clause to move there, so it seems that he wants to play there. And he obviously will be taking a lower cap hit.

Gagne is not leaving Tampa. He loves it there with his French buddies.
