Phoenix signs McAllister...

The Coyote look like they're about to move a defenseman, since they have 8, count 'em 8, NHL rearguards (even as limited an NHL as McAllister is) listed on their roster:

Derrick Morris (RFA)
Paul Mara (RFA)
David Tanabe
Sean O'Donnell
Denis Gauthier
Cale Hule
Brad Ference
Chris McAllister
They also have Ballard and perhaps Spiller and Jones pushing for jobs from within. With Boucher signed and LeNeveau perhaps not yet ready... doesn't it make sense for Regier to go shopping in the desert?

I'd love for DR to get his hands on Gauthier.

I'd prefer to put together a package to get D. Morris.

Morris or Gauthier...both would make me happy, happy. They bring different but equally important games to the table.

He can "play" either. "Play" being relative of course.

Wouldn't mind getting Ballard back.

Morris would be a wet dream.

I'm not big on Gauthier's play as a whole but I'm definitely not against bringing him in more or less to be a crusher and see how his defense can aid the team from there. Isn't his skating questionable? I honestly don't remember too well. I do remember him laying devastating hits but at the same time often finding himself out of position because of it. That is acceptable, but I just don't remember much about his skating and positioning when not looking to line up. It's been so long...

Yeah, he's not the most fleet of foot out there.

Phoenix is also awash in forwards -- 16 that I see if RFA's Kolanos and Taffe sign -- so it's not like Regier could throw in a sweetener without making this a larger deal.

i brought up morris' name a few weeks back thinking phoenix could be looking to move him because of all their players under contract and his poor 03-04
however, the phoenix board was very against moving morris, saying he was the cornerstone of their defense
so, i fear morris could be a really tough one to pry

Remember Gratton/Briere...

We could probably do Biron+2nd for Morris. Both of their goalies from the previous season are UFA and could probably save themselves a few bucks in the process if they opt to not resign Boucher or Bierk.

How easily we forget :

Stephane Beauregard + a 4th round pick for Dominik Hasek

Or Barrie Moore + Craig Millar for Miro Satan

Or my favorite... Mike Wilson for Rhett Warrener + 5th rounder (turned into Ryan Miller)

Looking back it seems like we make alot more good deals than bad deals, but we're always stuck missing the playoffs...why is this?

The 5th that turned into Miller was part of the deal that sent Grosek to Chi. for JP Dumont and Doug Gilmour...

So we got Miller, Gilmour, and Dumont for Grosek...

Nah, that was a good one too, but it was just Grosek to CHI for Dumont + Gilmour.

From TSN :

Quote:
10-Mar-00: Buffalo Sabres traded Michal Grosek to the Chicago Blackhawks for Doug Gilmour and Jean-Pierre Dumont.
and

Quote:
23-Mar-99: Florida Panthers traded Rhett Warrener and 5th round selection (Ryan Miller) in 1999 to the Buffalo Sabres for Mike Wilson.

No, it was the Wilson for Warrener deal. Buffalo just got Gilmour+Dumont for Grosek.

Convienently, the defenceman I'd be most interested in is also Paul Mara.

He's alright but honestly I don't see him as being much better than Tallinder. He definitely isn't the answer to our need for a partner for Kalinin, but if we can get him cheaply I'm all for it. Biron for Mara straight up is pretty good, but I wouldn't pay much more.

I actually suggested Biron straight up for Mara in a proposal thread. It's pretty much a wash as far as salaries go, and it helps out both teams.

The Tallinder comparison is decent, except Tallinder is better defensively, and Mara is better offensively. The thing they have in common is that they have great size, but don't use it nearly enough.

I just hope Phoenix makes a move for a goalie. Boucher is not a number one goalie.

Mara is good, but not what we need, IMO.

We need a top pairing to go with Kalinin.

I don't know much about Mara, but if Tallinder has him beat in the defensive game, then I don't believe he's what the Sabres need.

I'm not impressed by any of the 'yotes Dmen. We don't need a risky trade here, we need a solid guy, now.

Huh? Not much better than Tallinder? He's basically another Kalinin but bigger. Not the right guy to pair with Kalinin certainly though.

There are tons of goalies available cheap. Hardly any 25 year old 40 point defensemen on $1.5m salaries available. They're a much scarcer commodity, hence Biron for Mara is not a wash.

According to a thread in the Rumours forum, Phoenix is now in the market for a goalie. I think our crop offers more upside than the remaining UFAs.

Tanabe/Ference for Biron?

Kalinin-Numminen
McKee-Ference
Tallinder-Fitzpatrick/Jillson

or

Kalinin-Numminen
Tallinder-Tanabe
McKee-Fitzpatrick/Jillson
