I'm with you on that...we are stuck with Spacek and his contract for 1 more year, so might as well accept it and pencil him in as one of our 5-7 D.

I agree that signing Emelin means Wisniewski is as good as gone. That extra couple of million we get towards the cap means that if we are interested we are now in a position to overpay Laich if he's the guy we want to round out our top 6. Not saying that its a wise move, but if the Habs are high on him we can afford to give him 4-4.5 per season with enough room to snag a Talbot, Rupp or Konopka type for the 4th line.

Mike Cammalleri-Tomas Plekanec-Brooks Laich
Max Pacioretty-Scott Gomez-Brian Gionta
David Desharnais-Lars Eller-Andrei Kostitsyn
Travis Moen-Talbot/Konopka/Rupp-Ryan White
ex. Darche

Andrei Markov-Alexei Emelin
Hal Gill-PK Subban
Josh Gorges-Yannick Weber
ex. Jaroslav Spacek

Carey Price
Auld or similar back up

If healthy i think that's a significant upgrade over what we had this past season.

He got hurt pretty bad in a fight a year or two ago. I would not count on him to fight in the NHL.

Right now to me the D next year looks like

Markov-Gorges
Subban-??
Emelin-Spacek
Weber

Basically its up to PG to decide if he wants to bring back Gill/Hammer or Go for someone younger like a Bieksa or anyone else. Gill would be a nice cheap stop gap for another year, to wait out the Spacek contract imo. I'd probably do that. Him and Subban make a very good tandem, And I hope Markov and Gorges have built some sort of relationship rehabbing all year lol. Thats a respectable and very cheap D core that would free up some cap to go after some bigger forwards up front.

Take your scenario if Markov is injured and insert either Gill or Hamrlik:

????-Gorges
Subban-Gill
Emelin-Spacek
Weber

????-Gorges
Subban-Hamrlik
Emelin-Spacek
Weber

I'm sure everyone super excited to grab Ramo after he just signed for another 2 years in Russia.

I forgot about that well trade Pouliot and our first for a move up to grab Zibenijad. Throw in something extra if needed.

So if Yemelin is signing and is expected to be playing next year with the big club, does that mean Wiz is a goner, or that it's Wiz OR Markov at least?

Subban-Gorges
Markov-Wiz
Gill-Yemelin
Weber

Would be GREAT but you have to get rid of Spacek somehow. Wiz is too offensively gifted to let walk for nothing IMO. Hammer I feel is done.

To WhiteSnake and the rest:

http://montreal.ctv.ca/servlet/an/lo...MontrealSports

1) Basically, he can't start negotiating until Russia is out of the Worlds

2) There is no negotiation in terms of length and money - Because he is 25, he can only sign a 1 year deal for a max of $925,000 and $92,500 in bonuses.

3) Only thing left to negotiate is the AHL clauses (rights to go back to KHL if sent to Hamilton)

BTW that Article from Arpon Basu also says Gorges told Management that Gill had to come back because of his importance in the room.

So according to Basu:

Markov
Subban
Gill
Gorges
Yemelin
Spacek
Weber

Will be our defense most likely, with Wiz, Mara, Sopel and Hamrlik on the way out.

He makes it a point of mentioning that Yemelin + Gorges + Subban + Weber are all young

Can we fit all of those guys and Wisniewski around $20m? If so, that'll be awesome. I wanted Bieksa but Emelin is in the same mould at about $1m.

Markov $5.75m
Wisniewski $4.25m
Subban $875k
Gill $2m
Gorges $2.25m
Yemelin $1m
Spacek $3.83m
Weber $950k

Total cap hit = $20.9m

Obviously that means we carry 8 defensemen which leaves 13 forwards, but we'd be looking at:

Markov - Emelin
Wisniewski - Subban
Gill - Gorges
Spacek

And Weber can alternate as the 8th defenseman or at forward.

Hal Gill-PK Subban

ex. Jaroslav Spacek

Auld or similar back up

If healthy i think that's a significant upgrade over what we had this past season.
Overall I like the way you think with a bit of tinkering/adjusting(see above)

Full 23-man roster-depending on $$
doubt that Emelin will play 1st pairing minutes coming out of camp
Also Spacek is not going anywhere, possible that Emelin is eased in at #7
And not convinced that we will overpay for Laich, so pouls inserted as a space filler until a better solution is found
Webber will be you're 8th Dman as well as your forward insert a la streit
Darche your 500K ins policy
MacIntyre may be a possibility for a cheaper backup than Auld if they like what they've seen with the dogs playoff drive

Now that I consider it, Jagr at 2 million could look pretty good with Cammy and Pleks next to him. I know one game does not a season make, and I was not on the bandwagon to begin with. If Jagr has the fire/desire to come back and make a point what do we really have to lose if he plays like this?
So, i'm inserting him as an option on Plek's line

Wouldn't be surprised one bit to see Gill back, if the Habs do bring a player back from this past year it's Gill, he was great with Gorges last year and very solid with PK this year + a good leader. I really hope Spacek can be dumped but I doubt it. At least it's just 1 more year

I'd start the season with 8D, Emelin taking Picard's spot:

Markov-Gorges
Gill-Subban
Hamrlik-Spacek
Emelin-Weber

I do believe Emelin will sign this time. He has almost nothing to lose, he is established enough in the KHL that he will have a job waiting for him if the year in the NHL doesn't work out.

I had a feeling Yemelin had put on some height and weight since he was drafted, and that the numbers being reported were from then..
Guess what, I was right:

He's a beast!! Btw, these are as up to date as you get; from the WC site.

In defense of Emelin..the guy who fought him (Svitov) is a pretty solid fighter. He did a number on Darcy Verot and many others.

But yea don't expect Emelin to be a fighter..but he will stick up for his teammates.

I think that nex year, we'll see

Markov-Gorges
Gill-Subban
Spacek-Emelin
Weber

And i think that Weber will be part of a package to get a player and the 7D will be a more physical D (Henry)

So,

Markov-Gorges
Gill-Subban
Spacek-Emelin
Henry

That's juste perfect for me.

I really hope not, after next year with Spacek gone there will be a spot for Weber + in case of an injury to a player long term example Markov, with Henry in the lineup long term we are in trouble
