For Flyers, top goalie a priority (Also, Philly.com article in post #23)

MOD EDIT: Philly.com article (interview) with Ed Snider is posted in #23.

Quote:
Phoenix's Ilya Bryzgalov is the marquee goalie among this year's crop of unrestricted NHL free agents, but Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren and his staff are mulling over whether the team needs to make a move for a goaltender.

Bob may be a really good #1 if you guys can be patient for another year or two. The tools are there, just needs to develop a bit.

This defense doesnt have another couple of years to let a goalie develop....

So "mulling it over" justifies using "top goalie a priority" in the title?

It's just embarrassing at this point if that ****wad can't figure out the team needs a goalie.

It's obviously leadership issues, not the fact the goalie couldn't stop a ****ing beach ball shot from behind the goal line.

Let's see..Holmgren passes on Roloson not once but twice for different reasons but all of them lousy ones. He has the cap room of Ted Kazinski's shack out in the woods. His two major anchor D men that are breaking down quicker than a leper and one of them is so mad about how the team didn't feel like competing against Boston he read Holmgren the riot act. The Flyers broke the NHL record in the playoffs for pulling their goaltender and flip flopping the starters. He signed a stiff with a stiff back to an uncalled for contract and as a result may not be able to keep Boucher b/c Bob is better suited as a backup or starter depending on if they actually get a legit number one or have to accomodate Leighton and his ludicrous contract....umm is it any wonder why he's trying to downplay the obvious goaltending problem?

I would loved to have seen what goalie currently in the NHL could have lead the Flyers to victory in a series against the Bruins where they played like complete ****ing ass. The "mega-awesome-super-doo-dad-depthy-****ing Flyers" managed an amazing 7 goals in 4 games. So unless you can find a goalie who could score goals too I don't exactly see how all the "experts" around here really think a different net-minder would have made any difference.

Sounds like Brodeur is your man.

...if that fails, bring back Hextall and we're good to go.

Hextall has more playoff goals, I'd rather have a proven playoff performer.

Mulling over simply means weighing their options...which every team who's been eliminated thus far is currently doing in preparation for July 1.

How does that equal fire Homer?

Does not compute. Error. Error.

Trade Versteeg to whoever wants him for whatever they're willing to give back.
Try to move Carle for something decent. Sign a cheapish D-man to replace him.
Sign Vokoun. Problem solved.

I don't understand how anyone who watched the playoffs can say we have the goaltending to win a Stanley Cup. Boucher is WAY too inconsistent to be a #1. Bob has work to do. He might get there, it might be next year, BUT - he isn't there yet. My guess, he needs at least 1 full year maybe 2 of grooming before he is ready for the #1 job.

Bottom line, we need a goalie. None of the players will say that is why they lost, because, the rest of the team played like **** also. However, if you forget "who is to blame", then you have to admit - we need a legit goalie to compete for a cup next year.

I have to believe - this is just Homer not throwing Boucher under the bus. He doesn't deserve to be thrown under the bus. But, I suspect come July 4th we will have a new #1 goalie on the Flyers. If we don't, I will be very surprised.

If we sign Bryz to something more than like $4.00m per for 3-4 years, we will regret it when he doesn't live up to everyone's expectations.

Same for Vokoun, but we'll only regret that one because of his age.

Well I've regretted the last couple of decades and last two years in particular of our goaltending situation..time for a new paradigm ....

Yes, let's re-sign Boosh and ship Bob to Australia to play kangaroo hockey.

Not saying that we shouldn't sign a goalie. I have no faith in either of our three in the playoffs next year. We'll still once again be a regular season force regardless of who is in net, but we need a LEGITIMATE NUMBER ONE. Not an expensive number one, just a legitimate number one.

I think he's mulling over it for now because for ****'s sake, it's not even June and free agency starts July 1st. Give it ****ing time. Something will be done.

Ed Snider made it perfectly clear: The Flyers’ goalie carousel will stop. Now.

In an exclusive interview with The Inquirer on Wednesday, Snider, chairman of the Flyers’ parent company, Comcast-Spectacor, called the team’s recently completed season a “major disappointment” and strongly implied that adding a goalie was atop his priority list

After finishing second in the Eastern Conference and outlasting Buffalo in the opening round of the playoffs, the Flyers were swept by the Boston in the conference semifinals.

During the playoffs, the Flyers equaled a dubious NHL record by making seven in-game goalie switches.

“It was strange, and something I never want to see again,” said Snider, adding he had a "productive" meeting Wednesday with general manager Paul Holmgren and Peter Luukko, the Comcast-Spectacor president.

The Flyers had a 3.46 playoff goals-against average, placing them 14th out of 16 teams.

Told that the fan base was lamenting about needing a true No. 1 goalie for a few decades, Snider fired back: “I want one, too.”

He paused.

“So either one of the goalies we have has to step up in training camp, or we have to make improvements to make sure it happens. But we are NEVER going to go through the goalie issues we’ve gone through in the last couple of years again.”

That's the best Flyers-related news I've read in quite some time. I'm incredibly pleased.
