Manny's prognosis being in the top 5% of similar cases which is pretty miraculous. Can we expect another miracle? Who knows, but we should definitely not get greedy here and ask for another one.
It's not miraculous at all that he's in the top 5%. He's a professional athlete in good health and he's being treated by the best medical professionals who have extra motivation to do the best job they possibly can.
He should not be expected to have the same prognosis as the average person in average overall health receiving average medical care.
I'm not expecting him back in these playoffs but it wouldn't surprise me too much if it happened. There is reason to believe it's a legitimate possibility. For now though, I'm just planning on us being without him and if he does return at some point it'll be a bonus.
For the sake of Manny's health I hope he doesn't rush coming back at all. I'd hate to see him re-injure his eye after taking a big hit or something like that.
I'm glad he's with the team and helping them out with analysis. Knowing that is inspiring to me, so imagine how much more inspiring it must be to the team.
So here's my take... sure he's out for a skate, great stuff... BUT, why is he wearing a cage? He's out there alone, no sticks or pucks... nothing to protect himself from and I doubt he would fall... so, why the cage?
I think he's wearing it to see how much he can see with it on... now why would he be doing this? Hrmmm...
Seriously, if he wasn't coming back WHY would he be skating, right now, with a CAGE on? Why not just a helmet and a visor?
To me a cage is used in the NHL for players who are coming back a little earlier than planned to protect a still healing injury (jaw, orbital bone etc.)... I think that the cage says it all.
Could we see him late in this round or the Cup Final if we get there?
Amazing if it happens...
You don't expect him to fall, but it could happen. And he has very low vision on one eye, which should give him worse depth perception, so he might misread what he sees and fall. So if he falls, the cage will protect his face. It's really just an extra safety measure, I'm sure no one would want to be the guy that said he just drop the cage 5 minutes before he falls on the ice and falls face first.
There is no timetable for his return to Vancouver's lineup.
Ideally Vancouver would have Malhotra on the ice helping the playoff push; instead, the Canucks' coaching staff has been using his expertise off the ice. According to Associate Coach Rick Bowness, Malhotra has helped bridge the gap between the players and coaches.
"We don't always go in the room, (the message) can't always come from us, it has to come from within the room," Bowness said. "When it comes from within the room, it's got to be the right man, the right voice and the right tone that the words are being passed along to the players and Manny knows that.
"He knows when to get excited, and when to calm them down. That's the feel you have to have with your team and Manny has that."
I'm backing Ernie as well. I personally don't think he'll be back, but its a pretty good coincidence that he's on the ice before the 3rd round. Have issue with "word is" statement, really people? Do you think someone with real quality inside information is going to solely use it on this board? You'd probably hear rumblings about it in a few more places. A good piece of advice, take everything that is said on a message board with a grain of salt.
Yeah 'word is' .. that term is pretty vague. He isnt really claiming a source, and at best you can politely ask him .. ONCE .. to clarify whether he means he has a credible source or he just heard a rumour, or whether it's just his wishful thinking.
No need to go on and on and on for three pages arguing about it. Or to harangue him and accuse him of not being a linguistic expert and not using the exact correct term that a PhD in English Literature would have used.
Canadians they dont feel passionate about anything else on the planet, but hockey. Obsession time... they'll spend their entire life arguing to death a tiny minute point.

Take it for what it is (rumor) and move along. Further attacks either way will result in warnings, infractions and removal from the thread.
If you catch a glimpse of him in any pictures with the team in Nashville or through the rest of the playoffs, his eye is still half shut.
I don't think he has the vision right now to play.
Wasn't Henrik quoted on CDC as saying that you Manny looks great and it doesn't even look like there's anything wrong with his eye at this point? That doesn't mean anything in terms of prognosis, but whatever you were seeing has probably dissipated.

H.Sedin is not a doctor so i dont know why you take his word for it.

Uh, I know you're not a huge Sedin fan, but don't you think it's a bit much to assume that he can't even say that Malhotra's eye "looks" okay? You don't have to be a doctor to go, "Hey, wow, you can't even tell he had an injury"? It's not like he proclaimed him fit to return.
Yes, I read that. I was simply commenting that his "half-swollen" eye doesn't seem to be an issue anymore if we take Henrik Sedin at his word.
DISCLAIMER: Henrik Sedin is not a doctor, not has he ever professed to be, nor, to the best of my knowledge, has he ever played on in a Swedish soap opera.
Maybe he's skating by himself now to get comfortable enough to help out with on-ice practices? Seems like he really wants to do whatever he can to help the team, and the coaches love him.
