Flyers could host Rangers in Winter Classic (January 2, 2012 @ Citizens Bank Park)

http://www.csnphilly.com/05/12/11/So...730&feedID=704

Quote:
The Flyers will host the 2012 Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park, according to league sources, on Jan. 2 -- a day after when the event is usually held.

As CSNPhilly.com reported last month, because the Eagles and Redskins are playing on Jan. 1 at Lincoln Financial Field (assuming an NFL season and end of the lockout), the league was considering moving the game back a day because, sources said, the NHL did not want to go head to head with the NFL on New Year's Day. Citizens Bank Park was the only option if the game were to be held in Philadelphia.

This will mark the second time in three years the Flyers are playing in the Winter Classic. They lost at Boston's Fenway Park in 2010 to the Bruins. This will be the fifth Winter Classic for the NHL and second in succession in Pennsylvania.

Lame. They need to send it out West and let someone else have it. Minnesota should host the game. Or Colorado.

If some other team gets it, good for them.

But I want to see the Flyers on 24/7, and I want to go to a Winter Classic, and I don't care how many teams have to be screwed for me to get it.

As much as I like the Flyers having it again, share the wealth. I complained when the Pens had it twice, so I'll do the same with the Flyers. Yes I understand ratings and money. If that is why they are doing it, then so be it.

I agree with the above poster, move it out west.

I don't care if the rest of the league never gets a Winter Classic, I want to see the Flyers in it.
Period.

It's all for ratings/money. Their gonna get more viewers when a team like the flyers/rangers/pens/wings etc get it then a team like the Aves/Wild etc

There are other issues involved including broadcast obligations. If the game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Eastern time, that would be a 10:00 a.m. start in Colorado. There's also potential conflicts with major football powers (example if Columbus played, that could be opposite an Ohio State game on another network). Also, what commitments the network has with possible college football games on New Years Day (or if the game was to be moved to another day).

Yeah, I understand the point of having it in Philly to get ratings, so does that mean only Philly/NY/Pitt/Det are going to be the hosts? I just think the way to spread interest in the sport isn't to keep showing the same thing over and over again. Minnesota is the hockey capital of the US. Send the Rangers out there to play them or something. Hell, let the Rangers host it to grab ratings. It's just kind of silly to keep rotating the same teams in over and over again.

Yeah, I was thinking where the Broncos play, but Coors would be cool too. I think outside at the Gopher's new football stadium would be the best bet (or Target Field if that one isn't available).

Reported as done deal

waynefish1wayne has tweeted in the following two Tweets that an NHL source has confirmed it.

Quote:
A National Hockey League source confirms Thursday night that the Flyers will host the 2012 Winter Classic game on Jan. 2 vs. NY Rangers.

The game will be played at Citizens Bank Park. The game, normally played on New Year's Day, was moved because Eagles play Redskins Jan. 1.

To be fair, Holmgren had said they accepted the Boston one if they would get their own soon afterwards... They hadn't said exactly when but with what happenend with Versus/BNC/Comcast during the season, this was a given.

Have you ever wondered what it looks like to see a vending machine die? Here's your chance!

Hopefully I'll be able to get tickets. Can't wait for 24/7. Now we'll get to see that split in the locker room for ourselves.

I know they couldn't do it because of scheduling and because the Eagles would never let another philly team benefit off of them, but I would have prefered the Linc for this. Having seen both games at fenway, I can't say there wasn't a moment where I could actually see what was going on at the rink.

At least they have the new bigscreen put in this season. Unlike fenway that had that crappy one.

I hope they ring the giant bell every time the flyers score.

I couldn't care less about other teams that haven't had a winter classic.
All that matters to me is that the Flyers will play and I'll be able to see it.

The only thing thats kind of a bummer is that both teams already wear what are essentially throwback jerseys.

What could we possibly wear? A remake of the 80s-90s jerseys? I think I'd be ok with that

I agree, I thought that all teams were going to get a shot at it... but I guess they are going for ratings and money, which makes sense as well....

Flyers vs Boston again?
