Devils sign Gomez

Devils sign Scott Gomez 1 year 2.2 million dollar deal

http://www.adn.com/sports/story/6809494p-6699512c.html

Gomez doesn't deserve that kind of paper correct?

2.2 is reasonable. He was very good in 03/04. Gagne is a comparable player and is generally thought to be underpaid at 2.0.

Gomez had been scheduled to make $2.9 million in New Jersey last season after an arbitrator granted him that salary. But in the wake of the NHL's season-long lockout, its new collective bargaining agreement rolled back salaries 24 percent. That reduced Gomez's salary to $2,204,000.

Teams second leading Scorer in 03/04 with 70 points in 80 games. Their #1 center. Yea, I think 2.2 if very fair.

hedjuk is a marquee goal scorer and only makes like 4, gomez i wouldnt say is marquee yet, but is a very good NHLer and a great assist man, 2.2 is about average for that

There is a HUGE differnce. Hejduk was going to be UFA next year and probably would've gotten $ 5.5M if not more. Gomez, on the other hand is a RFA who signed only a one year deal and guys of his level have generally signed their QO this offseason.

So you can't compare their contracts. Hejduk's is a huge bargain, Gomez is not.

No kidding, in fact I think it's great. I was thinking it would at least get 2.5.

This was his qualifying offer, no?

its really tough to value these mid 20s players who are on the cusp of being either all stars or very good players (gagne, gomez, tanguay, havlat, etc). i think most will have to do with the 2-3 million a year contracts, then maybe recieve the 4-6 million a years depending on how they perform during the ones they are recieving now.

Well from the information you found, yes. I'm a Pens fan myself, so I don't know. Nonetheless, that was not the point I was trying to make. I was arguing that you cannot compare Hejduk's and Gomez's contracts.

2.2 is a fine deal for NJ considering Gomez was leading the NHL in assists (with St. Louis).

Also, he led the league in points-scored in the span between the 2004 All-star break and the end of season. That EGG line really sprung to life in the last halfseason of NHL hockey (Elias led the NHL in goals on the same span). If only the Devils had their secondary scoring firing at all...

good signing...but it seems like the devils may have some cap issues...with 5-6 players left to sign with 7 mil left under the cap...with stevens, white, friesen, and elias + others left to sign...much like the flyers situtaion was

Well Elias will not count against the cap until he returns. But once he returns they will definitely have to deal somebody.

I think Gomez is worth about 2mil a year, but I mean with this one year deal he HAS to come back from that injury and perform or else its his ass. I think its guys like John Madden who dont deserve 3mil. Hes under rated, but I mean signing him right away for that much sends a bad message to everyone else about what they're worth.

One things for sure they will have to trade someone or someone has to take a serious pay cut. Things dont look good right now.
