Exacty and in a cap world, this means having a strong group on the farm to fill in for call ups, which is what this kind of signing is about. Also, having a deep stable of defensemen means you can trade the surplus to teams having injury problems, which happens to a few squads every year.

As for Diaz it's most probably Hamilton for a couple of years, we might lose Henry or Carle so Gauthier is making sure there is some depth in Hamilton for the future
I think they want to hold on to Weber unless it's a "too good to be true" offer, he has the type of package that works in the post lock out NHL. He's a bit smaller than ideal but he doesn't back down and he has the potential to put up numbers and be a force like Wisniewski on the PP.

I think Diaz was signed in a similar role to when Streit came in, unless he has a huge camp will start AHL and potentially be a mid season call up or in case of injury then step in as a #6-7 next year. He made 600k at home tax free so this is his NHL shot, if he doesn't crack the NHL after a couple of years he'll probably go back home.

And why Weber isn't with his country at the WC??? And Diaz is the best defenseman of his country...

At this moment, we can think Diaz is better than Weber...

Theres like 1 guy who mentioned that. And it doesnt make it a ''non-story''. Your wrong all around lol

He was invited but declined. Weber played top 4 at the Olympics.

Hmmmmmm. Thanks.

I would take him. This draft is weak. He looks like he could be good. I wonder where he is expected to be drafted.

Diaz scored 31 in 49 last year (0.63 ppg) and 39 in 45 (0.87 ppg) this year in the top Swiss league. To put that in context, historically the Swiss league is about as tough to score in as the AHL so look for him to put up similar next year in Hamilton. By Desjardian's NHLE he scored an NHL equivalent of 22.2 and 30.6 points over a full season in the last two years. How well he can translate his game of course is yet to be determined.

He may be better than Weber at this point, (Statistically argueable either way) but is also 2 years older and thus probably has less upside.

It's always great to sign free prospects, as we have nothing to lose but only great things to gain.

Although he's a bit undersized, it's great to add to our defensive debt and even better when it doesn't cost us a player or prospect in return.

Small goalie with a funky style, would have to be late.

not one of you got the reason the habs signed him.
First he can play hockey.
the signing sends a big message to others that currently in negotiations.
Nobody will be holding the Habs hostage because there is nothing in the cupboard. So start lowering you asking price because if you hold out looking for BIg money you will find yourself playing in a desert.

And it looks like Diaz played with Metropolit and Paul DiPietro last season! From interviews, it seems like Metro has nothing but good things to say about the Habs organization.

Worst case scenario, he plays the full season in Hamilton and does not addapt to the NA game.

Best case scenario, he has a strong camp, starts the season in Hamilton, gets a call-up and fits right into the mix giving the habs a versatile more mature version of Weber and ultimately earns a 2012-13 contract with the big club.

Most likely case scenario, starts the season in Hammertown, finds his way into Montreal, impresses enough to get another 2-way contract.

Good signing, looks like we won out on the best UFA dman in the swiss league. Its great to have depth on d as we've seen this year. From PG, it sounds like they think he is NHL ready, it'll be nice to see him try steal a roster spot at training camp.

Does anyone know why Weber was left off the Swiss team this year? I know they asked him to come and be part of it but I also remember reading that they didn't want him to play and he agreed or was fine with that as well.

Why did they want him to be there though, as a mentor maybe? Or did they maybe not want to take away from some younger player's development?

Good signing for what it was. Nobody expect him to be a top 4. At worst, like some people said, he helps Hamilton...what's wrong with that? Then, his experience might means he'll be a callup and then again...what's wrong with that also? Positive reviews, that's all I'm asking.

And frankly, I heard the news on the radio that we had signed a d-man from Europe and when I compare this signing to the rumor that was circulated a couple of years ago, I was extremely happy to see a guy like him and no Funky Cold Bezina.

The signing is great whatever angle you're looking at it. We'll then evaluate the performance in due time.

With Emelin coming in too, this confirms that one (or two) of Gill/Hammer/Spacek are gone.

Hammer is gone for sure if Emelin signs. They would love to get rid of Spacek but I doubt anyone out there is dumb enough to take him before the trade deadline.

I think this signing affects a lot more the re-signing of Wiz than any other defencemen.
