How big a heist would this have been

Remember this? Gomez for Datsyuk

http://netcrashers.wordpress.com/200...yuk-for-gomez/

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=322689

The original NY Post article (from Everson) isn't coming up for me anymore, so perhaps it's lost. I do remember the discussion at the time, and how many people were actually saying the value between the two was even.

Wow how things have changed. I'd still love Gomez on the Devils (I think he could revive his career here), but his contract isn't even the worst thing at this point. From all accounts, he's just wasn't functioning at an NHL level for Montreal at the end. Sad.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

And this post is epic:

He likely ate those words.

Gomez was putting up about 50 assist a year then and he actually had more assist than just about anybody in the league since 2000. Gomez was the premier playmaker in the league.

It wasn't far fetch to say Gomez > Datsyuk....in fact it was correct.

It wasn't until Gomez chased the big $ and big city lights that he sucked.

I support DF's comments and I would have made them myself.

That would have been amazing, nothing would be the same, though.

Epic bump on the trade board.

Datsyuk hadn't established himself the way he has now. Until 2006-07 he sucked in the playoffs. You guys can blow me, back then I made that claim and if I'd go back in time I'd make it again.

I just saw it. Good call Jim! We're not so different you and I. While Datsyuk always had potential he was a no show. Part of it was playing behind the guys the other part is that he needed to mature. He's done both now. Gomez at the time was a #1 C like you pointed out. The Canucks traded Cam Neely for Barry Pederson. So to laugh at me when trades like that have actually gone down makes you guys homosexuals.

Nothing wrong with that, it`s just funny how stupid it looks after everything that happened in years and just shows how unpredictable things are, especially speaking about players` development.

Doesn't look stupid to me. At the time it would have been stupid.

Maybe stupid isn`t the right word, but you know what I ment. It`s not the first time and certainly not the last time comment like this was made and then the whole situation changed. It`s the same with drafting, so I hope Lou & Conte know how it goes...

Actually, I think it speaks more to the horrors of massive contracts to players that have a tendency to be unmotivated.

True dat. But is Gomez a victim or a villain? (one of) That`s the right question.

He is the villian. And I believe he has character issues.

All you need to know about Gomez is he didn't get along with Burns. That says everything to me about his ethic.

Funny how things go in the long run. I won't boo at lou the next time he makes a headcratcher. Could be a datsyuk for gomez down the road

And I wouldn't mock mr. Woo woo woo cuz it was correct at the time as previously stated.

I made this thread just for a fun "what if", not to point out how silly people were at the time for thinking Gomez > Datsyuk.

I pointed out people's opinions at the time because if you came to the proposal today without context, you'd think it was crazy. Datsyuk at the time hadn't blossomed as a #1 center, and the Wings hadn't done much in the playoffs since 2002. Gomez, on the other hand, had just put up 55, 70 and 84 points in the three previous seasons, and had taken over the #1 center spot on the team.

Today, though, Datsyuk seems destined for the Hall of Fame. People questioned Datsyuk's competitiveness / grit back then. Turns out, Datsyuk has grit in spades. Gomer, otoh...who knew?

Well a lot of players didn't get along with Burns. That was at the core of Burns' coaching style and why most of his coaching stints were short with effectiveness wearing off after a couple years. Unfortunately we never got to that point with Burns.

Now not saying you are wrong about Gomez, just that not getting along with Burns isn't the best of reasonings.

Lou never offered Scott Gomez a long term contract at any point in his Devils career.

He did with Elias.

Compare the two players now.

Gomer had a wonderful skillset, but he was (and is) a lazy brat.

Now that he is older, fatter (and richer), it is no wonder the game has passed him by.
