Should Boogaard's number be retired?

What should be done with the jersey Derek Boogaard wore as a Ranger? Should it it officially be retired? Should it it be taken out of circulation quiet? Should it still be available in the future?

Fortunately, it is not often a team loses a player under such tragic circumstances. Given that Boogaard played only 22 games as a Ranger, do people feel that this is something that should happen?

I do not know what is tradition when a player dies suddenly in American sports. Personally I would not have any problems with the organization shows Boogaard the last respect by permanently leave number 94 to be Boogaard's number.

I don't think it should be retired, as in hung in the rafters, but you can take it out of circulation.

Nobody will wear it. Doubt there would be a formal retirement ceremony, though.

I'd vote for a quiet decirculation. To me the whole ceremony is not something you do for a death, it's more of a celebration. But 94 is a special number around here anyway, so I say take it out to honor a fallen teammate.

And I'm not saying this as a knock on Boogaard but he's no Leetch, Messier, Graves, or Bathgate etc. in terms of what he did for the team, so the number just won't fit hanging up with those guys.

I think some kind of ceremony should be held during the garden opener next season, behind that, I don't know.

should not be hung in the rafters but it should be taken out of circulation. Not that many players wear #94 anyway.

They will give him a great ceremony and honor him, for sure. Hopefully the players wear his number on their helmets all year and a patch.

I don't think the number should be taken out of circulation at all. What happened is sad and unfortunate, but if a player wants to wear that number down the road (for whatever reason), it's fine by me.

A sticker with his number of helmets next season is a good way to memorialize the loss.

No but I'm sure the team will remember him with a #94 somewhere.

I don't think it should be retired, just because he didn't spend much time here, however, I'd love to see a patch on their jersey's next year. RIP Boogy

I'm not against retiring it. Its not often that an active player on a roster dies. Its a big tragedy for the team and for the city as well - as everyone has mentioned, Boogey was very involved in charitable causes around the area. Also, its not a number that is worn often. I don't think there are any negatives to come from retiring the number given the circumstances.

Agreed. They also will honor him with a helmet sticker, I'm sure.

I'm very sorry that he died. But by all accounts he had already played his last game as a Ranger. Plus, he left no legacy so to speak of either. So, no, it should neither be retired nor removed from circulation.

Number shouldn't be retired but it shouldn't be in circulation, especially not in the immediate future.

His number should not be hung the rafters. The organization won't need to formally de-circulate #94 because the players won't wear it out of respect. I do expect some sort of patch or strip on next season's uniforms in his honor.

RIP Derek.

No, but they might have a night for him at the start of the season which I think they should (maybe in Minny too).

I think MN might retire his number, but the Rangers should honor him in some way due to everything he did with charities here. Maybe they'll set up another charity in his name or keep the ones he started up going.
