The west has two teams that kept coming small but kept their core - sedins, bieksa, loungo, thorton, marleaun etc - and added to them.
This flyers core has gone to a ECF and a SCF with career backup goalies - biron, boucher, leighton - and people want to blow it up.

Just add a goalie and another two way forward for richards.

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m)
Kris Versteeg ($3.083m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / xxx ($X.XXXm)
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / xxx ($X.XXXm)
Darroll Powe ($0.770m) / Blair Betts ($0.700m) / Andreas Nodl ($0.775m)
Matt Read ($0.900m)

DEFENSEMEN
Braydon Coburn ($3.200m) / Chris Pronger ($4.921m)
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m)
Erik Gustafsson ($0.900m) / Oskars Bartulis ($0.600m)
xxx ($X.XXXm)

GOALTENDERS
Sergei Bobrovsky ($1.750m)
xxx ($X.XXXm)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS:
SALARY CAP: $62,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $55,059,988; BONUSES: $1,700,000
CAP SPACE (18-man roster): $7,140,012

So $7.14mil to divide between a goalie, hopefully a decent two-way forward (not another offensively minded goof), and I would think Holmgren would go after a decent, proven 5th/6th defenseman. I like Gustafsson and Bartulis but I think they, along with the 5th/6th guy, could split most of the play throughout the year.

Potential targets for goaltending:
Tomas Vokoun ($3.500m to $5.000m)
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5.000m to $6.000m)
Miikka Kiprusoff ($5,833m)
Niklas Backstrom ($6.000m)
etc.

Potential targets for forward:
Scottie Upshall (<$2.500m)
Joel Ward (<$3.000m?)
Tomas Kopecky (<$2.500m?)
Brendan Morrison (<$1.500m)
Arron Asham (<$1.000m)
etc.

Potential targets for defense:
Shane O'Brien (<$2.000m)
Anton Babchuk (<$2.000m)
Steve Montador (<$2.000m)
Sean O'Donnell (<$1.000m?) ... wants to stay, perhaps takes a big paycut?
etc.

well he's making 2 now, and he had a pretty good season. i'd pay 2.5 for what he brings, but if you think he'd more or less take the same thing, then im on board for that too haha

See, once again, you miss the point. TB has the cap space to keep players, they can afford to keep players with @$22mill in cap space next season, and Stamkos in his first ever playoffs has five goals, four assists, nine points in thirteen games. In comparison Carter had six goals, five assists, for eleven points in seventeen games in his first time around and since then has accumulated seven goals, three assists, for ten points in eighteen games.

Flyers have several glaring needs: 1) a goalie, 2) lack of picks/prospects, 3) one of the WEAKEST develop systems in the NHL, and 4) a team with four fwds making $21.722mill, and five d-men making $21.891mill for a grand total of $43.613mill against a $59.4mill cap and no legit #1 goalie.

And Carter is not in the Stamkos league of scoring, this kid has 51 goals and followed it up with 45-46-91pts!!! Not even the same player, more tools to beat you. He is a top 3 in the NHL, Carter is not in that group.

Cole(3,000,000)-Richards(5,750,000)-Briere(6,500,000)
JVR(1,654,166)-Giroux(3,750,000)-Wellwood(580,000)
Upshall(3,000,000)-Carter(5,272,727)-Nodl(900,000)
Powe(800,000)-Betts(700,000)-Read(900,000)

Timonen(6,333,333)-Pronger(4,921,429)
Meszaros(4,000,000)-Coburn(3,200,000)
Methot(2,500,000)-Gustaffson(900,000)
Bartulis(600,000)

Bob(1,750,000)

Thats 57,011,655 for 12 forwards, 7 defense, and 1 goalie. If the cap goes up to 62.4 million that leaves 5,388,345 for a goalie and call ups.

In this scenario I traded versteeg and carle for methot.

would like cole at 2.8 and upshall at 2.75 but i put them higher because they may not be available at those rates.

Not sure what to put for the Price of Voukoun, I see anywhere from 3.5-5. I figured a 2 yr offer at 4 mil a season he would accept. If you get Voukoun no need to have Bob in the NHL cause he wont get the games and his cap hit would be way too high. If we cant get Boucher at around 700K to backup there is always other options...

I say trade hartnell for picks. Erik Cole to me would fit with briere or richards line.

Kopecky at 1.75 is prob far fetched, but if you can get voukoun for cheaper you could offer him more. I think Kopecky Richards Steeger line would be one hell of a defensive line.

Tried to keep it somewhat realistic...

Throwing Bob in the AHL will do nothing for him at this point.

Yeah, and part of what makes Vokoun and Bryz so attractive is that they can mentor Bob.

I'd prefer him. He can be had for a shorter and probably cheaper contract. Have him long enough to transition to Bob...assuming Bob develops as hoped.

If that were the case you would have to do Vokoun. If you get Bryz its gonna be like 5yr 25 million (I'd imagine) and Bob would get hardly any playing time and you would be paying 1.75 million to a guy getting like 15 starts.

You could go Vokoun/Bob and give bob like 20-30 starts next season but it would cost you a roster player.

Exactly.

I have to say though, I know some of the posts on here were jokes, but some of the serious ones, there are way too many "if's" and changes the whole complexion of the team. We must not rebuild, but reload, just with only 2 or 3 new pieces if you ask me (from other teams that is). We have all the makings of a cup team, we just need to find someone to give us confidence in goal game in and game out plus guys that can definitely step up over their salary, such as I could maybe expect some good things out of Nodl and possibly Wellwood this coming season (would love to see Wellwood play).

Hope I made sense .

Carle however should be gone. He had the most turnovers this past season and had so many mental lapses without Pronger there.

Vokoun would need to be willing to take something under 5 mil though. likely 4-4.5, though.

I agree with everyone who says Vokoun is the ideal fit because he will likely be cheaper and shorter term. However...

If signing Bryz to a 5 year deal is what it takes to make SURE we get 1 of the 2 of them, you have to do it. Who knows if Vokoun is even on the Flyers' radar, or vice versa. Negotiations may not work out there. In which case, you can't let an extra year or 2 stop you from getting Bryz because you have Bob in the pipeline. Worst case is we have a Vancouver situation with a great Vet and a young, starting caliber guy behind him and all of a sudden we have a trade chip.

All I'm saying is, I'm not saying "no way" to Bryz at a longer term just because of Bob. If that ends up being our only option for whatever reason, you don't not pull the trigger because of Bob.

I agree with you. Thats why I didn't try to make too many changes. But if you want Carle gone, and I think sending Hartnell eslewhere, you could get vokoun and cole. that would make me happy.

I agree 100%. Just careful with the offers. Sather sent Gomez and Drury matching deals via Fax. The acceptance came back at the exact same time and was a binding contract, so he had signed both. He sent them out thinking he wanted one but to be safe he sent to both and ended up with both. Imagine if Homer did the same, we go from Boucher/Leighton to Bryzgalov/Vokoun. Now, that would be funny.

Not a bad team. Couple of things:
1. You can cahnge the cap limit up top, next year is expected at 62 million. So, you can then give Kenopka a realistic amount and hopefully resign Powe/Nodl to replace our AHL guys.

Now that's just silly and terrible business haha. And where did you hear this because they most certainly do NOT have matching contracts?

I didn't realize that. Thanks.

Tell that to Schneider and Bernier. All young goalies have a need to develop proper technique and skills in a less pressured environment. I was all for getting him in this year, but by the end of the season it was very apparent he needed to get some time in the AHL getting acclimated to the NHL game and working on certain things with his game. Flyers need to invest in his future, develop him, goalies usually do not get to the NHL starting level until 25-26 and most successful goalies who realize their true potential are more 26-30.
