I got 10MBps, but I download files at about 300-700kb/s.

In Prague, for 50$ for 5 months (10 bucks a month) , I was downloading files at 3-5MB/s, pretty much unlimited bandwidth .

We're getting screwed on internet and cell phones

For those with videotron, whats your direct download speed? Not speedtest. I sometimes find myself going very slow. Also, ever have to pause youtube to let it load if you have 30 mbps+? Kind of annoying.

Uhh you're not getting 10mbps. 300-700kb/s = 2.4-5.6mbps

I think McGill's connection is a tenth of Concordia's... 90 Mb/s is overkill... And yet they have facebook blocked

Depends where you go I guess. I'm in ENCS labs. I NEVER go to library. Here everything is unrestricted. People play games. You're not allowed, but it's not blocked.

My old computer (Intel P4/ 6+ years old) just broke down, got a weird reboot loop when i open the PC. I was playing Diablo 2 and it froze on me so i shut down my PC and the reboot crap started kicking in.

Looking for a place in Montreal to repair my PC and a good store to shop for a new computer.

Question for techno guys

So i am working with a comp at my job in a factory and few of the guys there warned me to be careful because there's a central that can see any of my moves. They told me that a guy was fired because they caught him sending to many emails via hotmail/msn. Now, i'd like to be sure that only lurking on forums and the net without posting or anything would be safe. Is it? (by the way in the factory departement im one of the few with a comp but elsewhere there is alot of them)

Internet use can be monitored for sure.
Is it safe? That depends on your company and their policies.

It all depends on your employer and how strict they are, really. If someone else got canned for sending too many personal emails, it sounds like they crack down pretty hard on that stuff (unless he was literally spending his entire day emailing friends and not doing any work) so I'd be careful and probably only browse the forums on my breaks, just to be on the safe side.

Since you're on the company's computer (as I understand it), it's entirely possible for them to monitor your screen directly. A friend of mine had a woman at her company get fired because they could see she was spending hours of her day playing around on Facebook.

it is easy to track what you do.
they can use many strategy to track you

keyloggers is a noob strategy for tracking .
If you use their network, then they control what you do

firesheep : it is A Firefox extension that demonstrates HTTP session hijacking attacks.
http://codebutler.github.com/firesheep/
you can access to hotmail/facebook/etc accounts using the same network as yours

also My friend's boss told him that he had access and was able to see what he do and emails sent through company email

there is the technology available.

The simplest way to cover your tracks, as basic and stupid as this sounds is to hide the taskbar on bottom of the screen. This way, when you minimize something, it's not visible even if you're not using it. Sounds stupid, but I'd bet if they ever catch you, it's not necessarily when you leave something open but when it's just hanging around on taskbar and they notice it and wait for you to reopen it. lol Saved me a lot of times. Unless it's not a visual thing and more a keylogging thing then...well, there's other ways but who knows how they are monitoring you.

It might not be your router, check your modem. If you have 30Mbps with a DOCSIS 2.0 modem you will have hiccups. Consider investing in a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

I have a 5mbps connection and I never have to pause youtube.

Also, the tracking programs aren't so cut and dry. They literally log every incoming and outgoing connection to servers, then rank them by how much you use them. There are ways around it, but not any pretty ones...

If Videotron is messing with you try a different provider, they all have different equipment so stability will be increased depending on who you use.
