The sliding is the excuse they used to ban them, but most players still elected to wear the Cooperall padding after the pants were banned, so it was a step forward in hockey equipment, and basically paved the way for modern girdles and shells.

Wasn't my intent to correct.

It could have been early justification to promote the get-up. I do remember when the NHL had its vote, the Flyers were the only team to oppose the NHL's ruling. Snider basically said it wasn't worth the fight.

Saved this pic for later reference. For years I've felt like the only person who was bothered by that phrase. Glad I'm not alone!

Back on topic: A. SUPER stoked on 24/7 with the Flyers, and B. The Winter Classic jerseys will definitely be very interesting, I'd like to see them bring back one of the jerseys from the Lindros era, but considering they're more 'old' than 'retro' (not sure exactly what the math is regarding what makes something retro) I bet they'll come up with something new. Should be interesting!

Here's supplementary info...

Also, expect the Flyers to go all out to make this Winter Classic the biggest event the NHL has ever hosted.

In what is a unique circumstance unlike anywhere else in the NHL, the Flyers will be playing the Winter Classic across the street from their home arena. This will allow the team to house other supporting events at the Wells Fargo Center that will be in conjunction with the main event at the ballpark.

Comcast-Spectacor COO Peter Luukko said in an email that many details to what will surround the event are still being determined and finalized, but a source close to the event said to expect the Center to be used for things like a concert or other hockey related events that could be open to the public.

The one thing that will not be ready to be put on display will be Philly Live! The state-of-the-art entertainment experience with restaurants, shops and clubs that will be built adjacent to the Wells Fargo Center will not be ready until April 2012, three months after the Classic.

Yeah, I was thinking where the Broncos play, but Coors would be cool too. I think outside at the Gopher's new football stadium would be the best bet (or Target Field if that one isn't available).

I'm from the Boston area and I attended the Frozen Four in St. Paul last month. My hotel was next to the U of Minnesota campus, so I ended up walking past the Gophers' football stadium several times, and it's a great looking place that would be perfect for an outdoor game. Minnesota should probably get a WC someday, and they can include a Gophers outdoor game, the same way they did in Boston with BU and BC.

I could see that, but the thing is, the Winter Classic is billed as a "throwback" game and their most "historical" black jersey was only introduced in 1997. The "modern" orange jerseys with piping are 30 years old at least.

The Flyers regular home jersey is a throwback as well, so they might just stick with that, or perhaps Philadelphia Quakers? I love the Blazers jerseys as well, but would they wear non-NHL jerseys?

^ Apparently HF poster "Krazy_Eyez" already made an intriguing Flyers/Quakers mock-up last year.

If they don't want to go with the old Philadelphia Quakers (NHL) or Blazers (WHA) they can honor all the NJ fans across the river and go with the New Jersey Knights (WHA) who only played one-half season less than either the Blazers or Quakers.

...Story behind the Knights unis is that they quickly moved south from the NY Golden Blades (IIRC) and needed a new identity and uniforms... They -- I believe it was player/coach Harry Howell -- went to a sporting goods supplier and found that they could readily purchase enough home and away jerseys to supply the team from them... and he jerseys had Chess Knights as crests... so they bought them and adopted the name 'Knights' and hit the ice at the old Ice House in Brace Road, Cherry Hill NJ, some players still wearing golden colored skate blades from their NYC days... That was halfway into the 1973-74 season and lasted until the end of the season when they again relocated to I forget where.

You can't make these things up.

They became the San Diego Mariners. Owned by Ray Kroc, the chief exec of McDonald's. From there, they were supposed to move to Florida but couldn't find an arena (that happened with two other franchises in the WHA).

Did they win a championship after one of their players stripped on the ice?

Since January 1, 2012 falls on a Sunday, the holiday by law must be observed Monday, January 2. It's all but certain to be an afternoon game.
