Does anyone know when the last time there was an offer sheet used? I don't recall one after Vanik to Buffalo. It seems there is an unwritten rule with the GM's not to use this process. Thoughts? Are we concerned we may lose any of our RFA's to Offer Sheets?

Last year San Jose threw one to Chicago's Hjalmarsson, which they matched.

I'm not really concerned though, they'll be signed by July 1st or offered arbitration to protect them.

It really isn't Sathers style, but if anything he'll be throwing one out this year, not worrying about getting hit with one.

Andrew Ladd could be a prime target.

I think that the middle range $3,013,433 - $4,520,150 is the key, because as soon as a 1st-rounder becomes involved (which is very valuable in the NHL), it makes teams start to think about not matching. Most RFAs that get offers are below that threshold.

I think that our particular RFAs are not necessarily in great danger of getting an offer sheet. To get Dubi and Cally, teams would have to offer them $4.5M plus a year for Sather to blink and I'm not sure any team would do that. I guess a team could offer Boyle, AA, or Sauer a deal at $1.5M plus deal, but the compensation isn't good enough given what those players bring. Sather would match.

The other part of this is that teams could send a bloated offer, knowing that Sather would match, just to inflate the cap #, BUT that is highly frowned upon among GMs. Basically... as a GM, would you want a team doing that to you? No, then don't do it to anyone else. That is why there aren't a lot of RFA offer sheets.
