Offering a 4-year contract is stupid. Offer either 8+ years or a 2-year. Make him turn down $50 million if he wants his UFA so bad.
That's interesting, can you elaborate on why you think this?

No that will always be the Pitssburg penguins.

We will have a good looking team, no homo. Rundblad, Landesdog.

4.375 cap hit

That be a pretty cool deal if it could be done.

I'd totally be down with that. I wonder if he'd take it.

We don't want to sign a contract that expires in his first UFA year. Our goal should be to wrap him up for 8+ years. The worst case scenario is losing him in four years just as he is entering his prime. We can try to entice him to sign a long-term contact if we front-load it enough, and offer a stark contrast between a $50 million contract front-loaded, or a two-year $8 million. If he wants his UFA badly enough, he will get it, but we should at least make an attempt to sign him long-term, as this might be our only chance.

Thanks for the explanation! I agree with your reasoning, for some reason I was under the impression that a four-year contract would take him to his last RFA year but I was misinformed and I apologize.

In most cases, I'm not a fan of long-term contracts but Karlsson is a different case than say Hossa in Chicago or Zetterberg/Franzen in Detroit since they are older and would have a high cap hit near the end of their contracts as they're nearing 40 years old. Karlsson on the other hand would still be in his early 30s so 8+ years is a good term for the team. My only concerns are significant injuries and decline in his play, which I don't see happening albeit it is still a possibility. That is why I like a three year contract for Erik, since we can make a better evaluation based on his play and on the team's state in the future.

Then again, my way will most likely be much heavier on our cap, especially in Karlsson keeps playing the way he has and improves, but I think it is less of a risk.

6 years at 4.5 million a season is what I'd give him.

Then he's entering his prime as a UFA, and if he continues to develop, will ask for 6 million.

if this is january or february, he's having a huge impact on our PP1, scoring at a a 40+ point pace, and holding his own defensively, i would think we'd have to sit down with him and discuss 5+ years starting at at least $4.5mil and likely going up as high as $5.5mil. i would NOT pay this kid a dime more than that though on a long term deal. thats just not a smart way to manage your cap. we still have the hammer over him as an RFA for several years. that doesnt mean we screw him, but its stupid to throw massive $6+mil contracts at kids who are still years from UFA status unless they are absolute, bonafide stud cornerstone franchise players.

If Melnyk has the pockets for it... Myers deal is front loaded

Myers 7 years, $38.5. $10M signing bonus July 1, 2012
So Myers gets $12M in Year 1, followed by years of $6M, $5M, $5M, $4M, $3.5M, $3M.

If Karlsson is producing at a 40+ point pace you wont get him for a penny less then Myers.

If he is really killing it at a 50-60 point pace you are probably looking at 6+... Doughty could be the bench mark

dont get me wrong, i LOVE the kid, but myers can be seen as more of an all-around cornerstone no.1 d-man than karlsson. myers is massive, should be very good defensively, and chips in on offence too. karlsson could very well settle in as a top shelf, 1-dimensional OFFENSIVE defenceman only, with some defensive liabilities. until he shows me that he can hold his own physically and defensively, and not just be a 1-dimensional offensive PP puckmover, i'd hesitate to give him the really huge money long term.

I'd probably just offer even longer term and possibly get him down to 5-5.2

5.5 million is only like 8% of the cap and when the cap goes higher the percentage will drop.

I can easily see going into negotiations Karlsson arguing he is worth 9-11% of the cap.

It's going to depend on how well he plays this season. If he continues to improve and mature on the ice with better decisions, he should get close to Myers money. I don't see him being at the same level, more in the 4-5M range. Sens also have other stallions like Rundblad which means that should negotiations not go as planned there are others in the stable, which I am sure Karlsson's agent will understand. If he was our Only Hope then he would have us over a barrel like Myers in Buffalo...but he is not. Thankfully.

Hopefully Karlsson's contract will be the start of a positive trend and we can build up an organization where people sign reasonable contracts to stay competitive. The kid seems pretty sensible as well as loyal and he roomed with Alfredsson for awhile. We all know how Alfie handled his contracts throughout his career, so maybe that will have rubbed off on him. With all of these young players coming in at once, the team should focus on really creating a bond between them all so that they try to stay together.

I can see Melnyk not wanting to do front-loaded as much because of the Heatley thing, but it all depends on how much term Karlsson is willing to take. If he's willing to sign for 7+ years, then I'll bet the cap number will be very affordable.
