Niklas Hjalmarsson trade question

Since Hawks cant trade him until July apparantly because of offer sheet. Would there be any issues if Hawks traded him at draft by sending Future considerations to a team with understanding that the future consideratons would be Niklas Hjalmarsson in July?

I dont see anything in CBA forbiding that method around the CBA trade restriction of offer sheet

For example could the Hawks make this deal at draft

2nd + player/prospect to Hawks for future considerations (Hjalmarsson in July)

I'm not sure, but my thoughts on this is to trade 2012 picks for 2011 picks (provided the Hawks get the upper hand there), then trade Hammer for our 2012 picks when the time comes.

I'm not sure if that would be kosher.

My question is, why would the 'Hawks want to deal Hjalmarsson? Has he seriously regressed or something?

No, and I don't think they will this year. It's just about the idea of exploring opportunity cost for the 3.5M.

This is just an outsider's thoughts, but IMO the only reason why Hjalmarsson would be traded would be to free up cap space.

Yeah I am not saying I want Hammer gone but if Hawks could find a suitable affordable option who provides what he does I wouldn't be against moving him.

He is good dman but at 3.5 mil he is overpaid (Thanks Wilson).

Just exploring all options going into offseason

Well, that is a viable reason to deal someone. I just didn't think that the 'Hawks would be desperate enough to do that this summer.

Not about desperation but if moving Hammer's salary opens up option to find the 2nd line C we have needed for a while (Sharp at LW on Kane/Toews line is deadly but he plays #2 C because we lack depth at C) the Hawks need to look into it

+ if Moving Hammer means more depth thru the roster it should be considered

Considering you could have had a 1st + 3rd for him in RFA compensation last year (and kept Niemi), I don't anticipate the Hawks jumping at trading him for, what could likely be, less of a return this year now that he carries a 3.5M price tag.

It's always good to keep one's options open.

If moving Hjalmarsson's contract helps the 'Hawks in some other way (like acquiring a #2 center), then it should be deeply considered.

While it doesn't violate the CBA, you'd have to think the league wouldn't approve the trade (assuming they must approve all trades that come through?) if it's a draft pick and prospect for nothing (future considerations).

If it was a draft pick + salary dump player for futures, they would allow that I would think.

I'm pretty sure the league has some general clause for punishing teams trying to circumvent the CBA. They did smack Lou around pretty hard so I don't see Blackhawks doing anything like this.

After the issues with Niemi's agent and them turning down an offer that was basically what Crawford got this summer there was really no return in plans for Niemi IMO

And yes we would get less then what we would have gotten from Sharks but that doesn't mean you dont move a player if it is in best interests of club to move him

We have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds. Waiting for july and getting a 2012 pick is a better idea.
