He Who Must Not Be Named - almost 5 years later...

All this talk about ATL moving made me realize that it's amazing how people's still are convinced about how Balsillie was a god-sent. Balls was going to deliver a hockey team to the promised land of Southern Ontario but was dashed by Bettman, the 'shaddy' character.

A few things about the Saviour:
-Balsillie's company, RIM was involved in some trouble for back-dating stock options (what kind of people did he hire there who would do such a dumb thing).
-A guy who swore on live TV (might be silly to others but I held it against him).
-A guy who basically tried a hail-mary approach to buying the Coyotes (granted, it was AFTER our debacle).

Never mind the Board of Governors/Team Owners' comments about him, the history of Balls should make anyone worried.

The Pegula purchase of the Sabres is the way it should be done. Pegula went to Gary Bettman and said he wanted to buy a team and went through the process/rules that were set out.

@brah: I think this thread was inspired by the Jim Balsillie thread on the Business of Hockey board in which plenty of Canadians are still propping JB up as a great man who just wants to bring more hockey to Canada.

I always said I hated his guts and wished he would vanish from the face of the planet. I also said if he ever somehow succeeded in getting his own team I'd love playing against them because we would instantly have a good Wrath of God style rivalry that was fueled by real hatred.

Those other threads are hilarious. It's painfully easy to tell who hasn't been paying attention. I'm just afraid to post in most of them because the ignorance is contagious and almost tangible.

I was thinking about this earlier today, how one of our strongest arguments against Balsillie was that he was going into the purchase/relocation with "no regards to the rules",That he was being blocked by Bettman because of thumbing his nose at the process, that he basically already had the team in Hamilton before the purchase was even complete.

And somehow that topic hasn't come up at all with TNSE having the Thrashers in Winnipeg and there isn't even a finalized sale yet.

He pretty much could have had our team if he wasn't such an *******.

He refused to put money down with the letter of intent.

He wouldn't agree to a league rule that a new owner must in good faith try to make a team work in that city for 2-3 years before moving the team. (Is that still in existance? It doesn't seem like it for Atlanta's case.)

He filed for relocation before he even owned the team.

He started selling tickets with our name and logo.

He lied to everyone's face.

What gets me is that he meddled into the team and city before he even offered to buy it. Makes you wonder what other franchises he did this to!

Then even after the local group plus the real "He Who Must Not Be Named" agreed to buy the team he then tried to railroad that deal with the city and their loan could have not been approved. He was still taking season ticket deposits at the time.

Then he tried to buy the shares from the real "He Who Must Not Be Named" and wanted rights to move the team when that wasn't even a majority stake in the franchise.
If that had happened I was hoping the Preds would Give him a title like Awesome Super Sensational Hamilton Owner Loves Everyone, OR just use the first letters of each word on his jersey

I think it might be because some of the things i've read had indicated true north has been playing nice with bettman for some time............establishing themselves as "suitors and businessmen".........so it's not coming out of the blue for Bettman.

Now the actions/inactions of the owners in atlanta........that's the real ass kicker.

I think that the good faith try was in regards to the fact that the Preds had a long-term lease in the Sommet Center (now Bridgestone Arena). Atlanta doesn't have a lease at Phillips now which makes them portable in the eyes of the NHL. PHX does at Jobing.com and why there is such a battle there to find someone to operate it locally. If the Thrash had a lease in Phillips, it would become the PHX situation and likely an even bigger mess exponentially than the Coyotes have been.

Watching all of this just makes me grateful for the team/organization we have even more!!!!

You could probably add Campbell(Ken), Climer and Biddle to that list.

Motion seconded.

Edit: I motion for the addition of Alexandre Burrows, the Sedin twins, and every member of the Vancouver Canucks team.

The problem with such is that there's no sense of scale there. I mean, yes, there's reason to hate Kesler, but is there reason to hate him more than Balls?
