I sure hope one of the goalie draft picks turns out to be a steal.
We have seen too many busts with goalies picked.

Funny story about how he didn't believe he was really drafted. It's too bad I wasn't on the lookout, Austin Levi was sitting 20 feet from me.

I forget if the Devils announced the pick as "We select from the Plymouth Whalers.....Scott Wedgewood" which might have gotten Levi inadvertently excited. Levi did go with the next pick to Carolina; Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos also owns the Plymouth Whalers and tends to draft one whenever they get the chance.

Yeah...if he turns out to be a solid starter for us, then IMO no matter how good Merrill is Wedgewood would be the bigger success.

It's so weird being older than draft picks.

Love his name though, and he has plenty of time to develop since he's just 17.

You don't make 71 saves on 74 shots against the most recent dynasty in junior hockey if you don't have legitimate talent.

It's also going to be fun tracking goalie prospects again, now that we have three in the system.

Interesting to read that he considers himself a bit of a hybrid goalie, and also that he likes to play the puck. Sounds like someone we know.

Also, his name is Scott. That's a name that has treated this organisation well over the years.

Kid looks good. Sound positioning and he's fast. With the right development and coaching he could turn into something.

Hopefully 3-4 yrs when he's ready if Marty isn't playing he can coach the kid.

I see this kid like that Mason kid from Columbus, he does't really play that much in his draft year. The next season he is given the ball and rolls with it developing into a really good goalie. that is my hope.

Isn't Wedgewood a hybrid like Marty? I've also heard he has pretty decent puck handling skills.

Bump.

Fantasy owner here looking for an update on his season. Looks like he became the starter in Plymouth and put up some good numbers, any personal impressions from fans that have watched him?

Everything points towards solid pro potential. Needs to work on rebound control though.

Can't imagine too many of us getting to see Wedgewood live--although I think one Canadian poster here went to see a Plymouth game and they started Matt Mahalak.

But just from following the boxscores, Wedgewood had a big start to the season and then hit a bit of a rough patch down the stretch. Most of us attribute that to him going from being a little used backup last season to a workhorse this year and he got worn down. Then he had a good showing in the playoffs.

I'm a Wedgewood owner myself, so I figure he's at least a few more years away from sniffing at an NHL job. 2011-12 will be his last OHL year (knock on wood), then probably a couple years in the AHL after that.

He basically stole a series for Plymouth against a far superior Kitchener team.

So he has a knack for beating the Rangers. That's a good thing.

I've watched him a couple of times and I like him alot. He has solid quickness, solid glove hand, knows how to read a play, covers the bottom of the net real well, is a competitor, and a very good teammate, his attitude is in the right place.

Some things he needs to work on are rebound control like Jason said, and he sometimes forgets to hug the post, as he has a tendency to get off it too quickly as it led to a few bad goals in the 2nd round of the Playoffs.

He actually reminds me of Antti Niemi. He has that hunched over style that Niemi has when looking at shooters which leads to some goals that go over his shoulders, and is great at making the 1st save.

In Kitchener they have this big media program at the local college. While volunteering at the memorial cup this weekend i must have met 50 people who are in that program and all 50 volunteer with the kitchener Rangers. I talked with a bunch of them mentioned Wedgewood and most of them swore at me! It was awesome.

Haha that is pretty awesome. Wedge definitely furthered his playoff legacy this year.

Anyone know how good Plymouth is supposed to be this coming season? I'd like to see him play behind a solid team.

That's pretty cool. Good to know we have a goalie in the system who can inspire such hate because of his performance.

Hopefully they'll be better, but they are losing three of their top 4 scorers who were overagers this year. But that should give an opportunity for Stefan Noesen and Rickard Rakell (both bubble first rounders this year) to step up even bigger next year. Max Iafrate should be more comfortable in his second OHL season. And they may get a boost if American prospect J.T. Miller (possible mid-first rounder) decides to go the junior route instead of North Dakota.

In their own division, Saginaw is also a young squad who should get better. Not sure if it's true, but one guy claims that Brandon Saad was playing with a torn ligament in his hand which would explain his lack of production down the stretch. And then there's Windsor who will be losing Ryan Ellis and Zack Kassian.

Hopefully Plymouth will be contending for a division. But they might also be in a spot where they trade Wedgewood to a Memorial Cup contender if they feel like Matt Mahalak is ready.
