pens fans apparantly "overrate" geno, yet there's a daily (ridiculous) offer for him on the table. when you take his age into consideration, (and you should) there's only 2 guys you can start that offer with. oh wait, make that one. the other guy already plays for pittsburgh.
While a players last season does have impact, you can't just throw everything a player has accomplished out the window. Especially with what Malkin has done in his career
Malkin is a beast. How he went from a top 3 player to suddenly being overrated is beyond me. He's not overrated, he's injured.
Just go back a couple years and see how he dominated the playoffs, with bad linemates. There is a player being overrated in this thread, but his name isn't Malkin. It's the one being compared to him.
Kesler is a great player. He's not on the same level though.
Id like to compile a list of all those who say malkin is overrated and create a thread titled "owned" when malkin is 100% this fall and will have legit linemates to work with. I hope he puts up 70 "phantom" assists.
Rangers say yes.
Canucks say no, but only because kesler's value is both in chemistry and talent, plus cap; flip side of the gamble is if Malkin emerges back to form; then it would be a steal.
Pens say no, but this is not so obvious. Two high picks and a W who granted is an incomplete player but is an elite sniper nonetheless making less than Malkin, and who would thus generate cap savings and space is not unimportant. A close no, given Malkin's uncertainty vs. the knee(s) and the current concentration of salary. [If those two were not the case, then this would proposal not even be a thought.]
It's a no Chester, because on balance 2 of the 3 have more to lose than to gain.
But hang in there; they're getting better.
Wait... Why wouldn't the Pens just trade Malkin for Kesler then? If they wanted to go a bit of a different way, they save about 3.7mil in salary cap space here.
So we give up Gaborik and 2 1sts and 3 2nds for Ryan Kesler?
Is this... I dont... im so speechless...
I mean I know Gaborik had an off year, but for ****s sake... Gaborik +15th overall in 11, 1st in 12, 45th in 11, 57th in 11, and 2nd in 12? If the Rangers trade all that it better be for a hell of a lot more then a guy who has had 1 significant goal scoring year and only 2 70 point seasons.??
Don't get me wrong, Kesler is an outstanding player and would LOVE to have him on the Rangers. But thats just a stupid price.

Insert the name Crosby or Ovechkin for Malkin in that question and you have your answer. Yeah, there is a salary difference, but when you are dealing with those names it is pretty much irrelevant. That people are taking this at all seriously is mind boggling.
Every one is so enamored with Malkin Vs Kesler, they forget to realized the Rangers get more boned then any one in this trade giving up 2 firsts and 3 2nds to minimally upgrade.

The reason was not because of value, I understand Malkin has more value than Kesler overall by a considerable amount. I was more comparing Gaborik vs. Kesler, why would the Pens agree on a 3 team deal where they get the worst player out of the 3 after giving up the best? And with Gaborik, you only save about 1.2mil in cap space. If Malkin is being traded, they can get a better player than Gaborik coming back.. That's more my point...

Haha I agree with this too.
Vancouver gives up Kesler for Malkin, and New York gives us Gaborik, 2x 1sts, and 2x 2nd to get Kesler. Something doesn't add up right there haha.
He was injured in 2009 and was on pace for 94 points in an injured season. That's underperforming?
In case no one has seen, Malkin is already skating. Reports are he was a "doubtful" grade if Pittsburgh was still in the playoffs.... Meaning he's already healed quick well.
Kesler does not equal Malkin. Sorry, but Malkin at his worst still outperforms Kesler.
Furthermore, Gaborik? Really? People complain Malkin is underperforming and injured, what about Gaborik?

So going by that logic Jonathan Cheechoo should still be in the NHL

Cheechoo hasn't cracked the 40 point barrier in 4 years. Malkin is one season removed from being on pace for the same point production as Stamkos, only he was playing with Fedotenko and Dupuis instead of St.Louis.
Rangers say yes.
Canucks say hell yes.
Pens get boned.
I wouldn't trade Kesler for any player in the league not named Crosby, and I'm sure MG agrees with me. Yes Malkin scores more points than Kesler, but Vancouver all ready has a Malkin type centre in Henrik Sedin. I'm sure the 29 other GM's in the league would take Malkin over Kesler but MG knows how valuable Kesler is to the organization and wouldn't trade Kesler for Malkin.
