Callahan Begins Preliminary Contract Talks

According to The Fourth Period, the Rangers have begun preliminary talks with Ryan Callahan's agent, Steve Bartlett.

Quote:
The New York Rangers have several key players on the roster set to become restricted free agents this summer, including right wing Ryan Callahan.
Callahan, 26, picked up 23 goals and 25 assists for 48 points in 60 games with the Rangers this past season. He missed 22 games with various injuries, and missed the playoffs after suffering a broken leg.

The Rangers have had preliminary discussions with Callahan's agent, Steve Bartlett, but a contract has not been formally proposed by either side.
TFP has learned that Bartlett and the Rangers are expected to resume talks in the near future and work towards getting a new contract ironed out.

Callahan, a native of Rochester, New York, earned $2.4 million this past season, with his cap hit being $2.3 million.
This makes me very happy! Get it done Slats!

Yeah me too, a Staal type deal. This is where slats has the leverage, he can show that he signed Staal to 5 yr- 19.75 or so mill. and he's one of the best young shutdowns in the league.

Hell yea! This is great news.

They need to start talking now because I have a feeling these deals will take a while to work out and we need to get them done before anyone even has a chance to offer sheet them (although I'm not worried about it happening it would be nice to remove the possibility completely).

I think 4 should be the absolute max. If it's anywhere between 3.5-4 I am thrilled and don't care about the term.

I just don't see that happening any time soon. No way Callahan gets the Captiency. Don't you know that in Sather's rule book you have to be 35 and earning 7 mil a year to be Captain? Just don't see Callahan jumping 9 years and earning 7 mil...

Cally or Dubi will be the captain either this year or next year (depending on the Drury scenario).

Book it.

I love it except unless Callahan is truly devoted to this team, and I don't want anyone telling me he is cuz last time i checked, only Ryan Callahan knows if he is, he won't sign for 7 years.

And remember Okposo just signed an rfa contract for 5 years 2.8 mill cap hit so sather will have that in his pocket as well. I know Okposo had a brutal season (of course started late due to injury) but the year before he had like 20 goals and 33 assists or something.

I would think he goes five years, max. That takes him to 31, where he'd still have one last, big contract in front of him. He may not have that at age 33, particularly given the way he plays.

He seems like a guy who isn't greedy, so I kind of expect some where around 3. If he is a true capitan, start of by helping the team out for more salary to sign or resign more players.

This guy's going to be captain if Drury's not here - that's obvious and has been repeated constantly.

I'd give him a long-term deal. Around 5-6 years for $18-22m.

There are two stances here; payday, and security. Personally, I feel that Callahan would aim for security, and with how important he is to the franchise, I think a very long deal is a definite possibility. Especially with the way he plays. He may be broken down the last 1-2 years of the deal.

Sather has probably held discussions with all of the agents representing the Rangers group II FA's.

Kurt Overhardt-Brandon Dubinsky
Paul Krepelka-Brian Boyle
Paul Theofanous-Artem Anisimov
Ben Hankinson-Michael Sauer
Kent Hughes-Matt Gilroy

Qualifying offers are due by June 27. The arbitration eligible players can file for arbitration on July 5.

I understand that, but five years isn't exactly putting his long term future in any question. How many guys his age lock themselves into legitimate long term deals? Other than the Ovechkin and Crosby types, who also get a boat-load of money.

But we'll see. If I'm him, I'm not going past 5 years unless my cap hit is $5MM.

hence why he would not want to take 7 years and be left a ufa at 33.
