not sure who the 6th was Ian Moran. The 3rd and 4th line guys were suited for that role which todays team has few if any that are IMO. More scoring on that team as well. Jagr, Mario, Straka, Kovalev, Lang.
No, not more scoring.
And I'm not sure if you're kidding, but of the 6 defensemen from that year, few ar legitimate NHLers.
Kaspar is awful defensively, Bergevin was already a minor leaguer, same for Laukkanen and Moran. Ference had the NHL level, but he's no more than a 6th NHL Dman. Moran is an AHLer. And there was no true number one.

Their overall team D is weak. The teams they had previously in years past were IMO just a little better don't you think? so like you said can't compare the 2. If you objectively look at the teams I mentionedhila, Ottawa, TB, Boston, NJ the Pens are not better than those teams. Your right you never know what can happen but I talking as of today. will they be better yes, kind of hard not to when you finish dead last. did they improve the team, yes but they are not a cup contender by any means.
how can you say with such certainty that new jersey(without stevens, niedermayer and elias) and toronto(allison hasn't played in what, 3 years?) will finish ahead of the pens? sure it's possible, but certainly not the slam dunk you're making it out to be.

without a doubt more scoring, there are to many if's for the current Pens compared to that group, didn't even mention Jo Beranek(kidding) still think that D was better defensively than today's group. Kasper is awful? would still be #1 today

Wow, you are blind or what?
Kasparaitis would be behind Gonchar, Tarnstrom, Orpik and Jackman today, and on even foot with Melichar. He makes tons of defensive mistakes.
As I said he wasn't even #1 at the time, and they were awful defensively.

Pitt looks great on paper but whose going to protect Crosby from getting the holy hell knocked out of him? P.S. Fleury is overrated.

As I said, Gonchar, Orpik, Melichar, Scuderi and probably both Jackman and Tarnstrom.
Really Kasparaitis was heavily overrated because of his hitting ability (and thus being a fan favourite). If you've seen him play in Pittsburgh, Colorado or NY, you should know that he is awful defensively, has no positionning and leaves his player to get a big hit far from the crease.
