this is flat false. you have no idea what a different circumstance creates. one of the things it likely created was a lesser team with lesser expectations. a team making the playoffs later in life as a bottom of the draw team and an underdog with a completely different table setting.

better lucky than good? maybe ovechkin retires this summer and backstrom shows up fat. you think that gets mcphee fired?

Our salary situation is pretty good right? Chimera and a pick for Hartnell? Changes the makeup of the top six and replaces Knuble nicely moving forward.

Wouldn't be opposed to it without seeing the salary #'s ... but why would they pull the trigger.

Hartnell just turned 29 and has a $4.2 cap hit for two more years.

Philly might want to cut salary to make a play for a goalie.

I could see that. I could see giving Hartnell Laich's budget line. Replace Knuble? That I don't see. Different player, difffenent roles.

Honestly idk what the **** this team should do. I would like to see Laich return and schultz(gtfo) gone. Maybe use Fehr, a goalie, and a 1st to get another scoring threat and try to pick a gritty dman in FA but again I really dont know what I am talking about but I dont wanna see this team get younger even though I like Eakin(call up).

Ideally they should get a legitimate, rugged shutdown defensemen for Green(*cough* Regehr). Trade Schultz, Fehr and maybe Semin. Get a 2nd line center, I prefer not to take the risk that Mojo falters and settle for trading for a fringe 2nd line C. Retool the bottom six.

I'd call it a good off-season if they could just trade Schultz.

So you are dealing away Green, Semin, Schultz, Fehr, and retooling the bottom 6? So at the conclusion of this you've turned over what half the team? Happens all the time...

Actually meant to say get a Shutdown D to pair with Green. 50/50 on Semin, either way I'm fine with. As for Schultz and Fehr I'd like them gone, but seeing as how Fehr might not be ready for the season and Schultz having the term that he does. Can't see them be too appealing to anyone.

It doesn't happen all the time. You're right. And that's led to a lot of championships and happy fans in Ottawa, Calgary, and San Jose.

Onward and upward.

Sure, lets turn over half the team. And when that doesn't work do it again. And when that doesn't work do it again. Rinse and repeat, because at least you are doing something...

Because keeping the same core that choked hard in 2010 worked so well in 2011?

* I think turning over half the roster after you turned over a third of the roster the year before is bordering on panick. It certainly would be the opposite of McPhee's stated views.

* Thrashing their roster hasn't helped Calgary very much, has it? San Jose has changed their gm, their coach, much of their roster...they've added a uniform even. Seems to me that the same could have been said of Vancouver had they lost. The Vancouver and San Jose models are roughly the same. Ottawa?

are saying blowing it up and start over? the main of the core is 8 and 19. 8 might have been fine enough but 19 was choking so hard he wasnt breathing by the end. Lets trade him...straight up for Stastny. ok?

By my count, we turned over 6 players from game 7 against Montreal. And none were really significant or risky save Varly.

Varlamov - starting G
Belanger - 2nd line center
Corvo - 2nd pairing dman
Morrisonn - 3rd pairing dman
Morrison - 3rd line center
Walker -4th line winger

i base it on new players start of year to year. this season started with alzner, carlson, johansson, neuvirth, hendricks, king. Thats 6 and I counted Perreault or Beagle(who started the season IIRC) in that open center slot. Thats 7 out of 23.

I go year to year rather than playoffs to opening night because you are taking into account rentals. I am not counting Hannan as a new player this year nor am I counting Wideman. You would not count Hannan if he stays nor Wideman as new players, but you have to factor them in as roster turnover at some point. Rental players like Wideman and Arnott come in when the 23 man roster limit is eliminated. I use 23 man roster to 23 man roster.

To be honest, I don't think the Caps need that much roster turnover. They do have needs that need to be addressed, though.

1) They really need a 1RW. Knuble is too slow for this role, and Semin and Ovi are both natural LWs.
2) They really need a 3C. Johansson may not be ready, but I have a feeling he will be thrust into the role of 2C. Boyd Gordon's a fantastic 4C if they keep him.
3) Schultz has to go. His complete inability to move was exposed in horrifying ways during the Tampa Bay debacle.
4) They need a faceoff specialist who also knows how to play hockey (sorry Steckel).
5) They need to realize that positioning doesn't get it done in the playoffs. Standing in the right position as the puck goes in off Bergenheim's skate for the 3rd time in the series is just one of the many reasons they lost. To win in the playoffs, you have to be physical AND be in position.
6) They have a major logjam at D, especially if Poti returns healthy. That many contracts of that size at one position will cause issues.

For all that everyone is down on Semin (and yes, the first thing out of my mouth after the buzzer sounded in Game 4 was "Semin's gotta go"), now that I've had a chance to look over the past several years, regular season and playoffs, I have to say that I think he's turning the corner. Sure, he'll always be known for the "Semin Hat Trick" (1G, 1A, 1 terrible offensive zone stick penalty), but he was one of the very few Caps who showed up in this year's playoffs, the Game 4 incident notwithstanding. That incident tells me two things:
1) The Caps were beaten before Game 4 ever started
2) Semin still has room to mature
But I think that he is almost there.

I could frankly go either way on a new coach. One thing, though, that I haven't seen mentioned, is that a new coach gives guys who were "in the doghouse" a new chance. So maybe instead of moving Fehr and/or Perrault, they could turn into productive players, put in the right situations. That's purely speculation though. However, especially in the case of Fehr, I want to be damn sure he's a bust before I move on. First round draft picks aren't cheap.

As for the discussion about how Washington has too many classy players... I agree. Washington absolutely needs more grit, hustle, and something my dad would call character on the roster. Sadly, guys like that don't survive in D.C. This is a city that cares more about appearance than substance, and it shows in every one of the sports teams, hockey included (sadly).

Here's my bold prediction: the Capitals will win the 2014 Stanley Cup. Not 2012, when the Caps first lose the Southeast Division to Tampa Bay. Not 2013, when the Caps miss the playoffs after Nashville comes to the Southeast Division. 2014, when the Caps have finally learned the hard way that in hockey, the team that works the hardest wins. That's when the Cup will come to D.C., and not a minute before.

Sorry for rambling. Go Caps!

Believe what you want....winning that lottery saved his job. You're putting on blinders if you believe differently. There's a talented bunch with no real face of the franchise without that lucky pingpong ball. Look where the franchise was right before that....is that really your idea of a successful GM'ing job?

The last sentences....more of your silly over the top nonsense.

1) They really need a 1RW. Knuble is too slow for this role, and Semin and Ovi are both natural LWs. - I think was ideally what Fehr was supposed to do... but apparently he's in Boudreau's doghouse and can't stay healthy
2) They really need a 3C. Johansson may not be ready, but I have a feeling he will be thrust into the role of 2C. Boyd Gordon's a fantastic 4C if they keep him. - Yeah, I think MoJo is going to be counted on to the 2nd line center. Eakin can't be counted on to be the third line center, at least not for awhile, so I agree this is an area of concern. If they hadn't **** the bed on the Belanger issue I think he would have been a great 3C. They might be able to find one in FA. I really hope Gordon is resigned
3) Schultz has to go. His complete inability to move was exposed in horrifying ways during the Tampa Bay debacle. - Defenseman who are neither physical nor fast on their feet tend to get exposed in the playoffs. Schultz would be an okay 3rd pairing guy, but Green needs a better partner if he's going be a top-4 D-man. As much as some are enamored with Orlov, he's not going to be that guy this year. FWIW I think a Jovo-Green or Markov-Green pairing would be good. If you got them on a 2 year contract or so, Orlov might be ready to step up when that contract is over. That would leave Schultz and Erskine to battle it out to be on the 3rd pairing with Wideman. If Poti does come back, this certainly complicates things.
4) They need a faceoff specialist who also knows how to play hockey (sorry Steckel). - Whats wrong with Gordon?
5) They need to realize that positioning doesn't get it done in the playoffs. Standing in the right position as the puck goes in off Bergenheim's skate for the 3rd time in the series is just one of the many reasons they lost. To win in the playoffs, you have to be physical AND be in position.
6) They have a major logjam at D, especially if Poti returns healthy. That many contracts of that size at one position will cause issues. - Agreed on these last two. If they expect Poti to return, I would guess our D will not have any personnel changes (and Hannan will walk).

That incident tells me two things:
1) The Caps were beaten before Game 4 ever started
2) Semin still has room to mature
But I think that he is almost there.

I think trading Semin isn't the right idea. First of all, he wasn't the problem; secondly, what could they possibly get that would make the trade worth it?

If you don't trade Semin and he walks, giving the Caps nothing for compensation, is that a win for the Caps?

I also really hope Gordon is re-signed. And there's nothing wrong with Gordon, except I disagree with the assessment that he's a faceoff specialist. I think he's more of a penalty kill specialist who also happens to be pretty good at faceoffs. What I was talking about is a guy you can send in on an offensive zone draw who will win you the draw more often than not, and is a real threat to score. I can't remember the last time Gordon's name was announced over the PA. Don't get me wrong, Gordon is fantastic and they'd be foolish to let him walk, but they need 2 guys.

I would love to see the caps somehow pry Ruttu (sp?) Out of carolina...hes tenacious and can score...I really like him as a player and feel the caps need more players like him...im aware this has been discussed...but one can only hope. On a similiar not...why doesnt bradley get more icetime? Hes had some big goals for us and mixes it up quite well.
