He was horrible down the stretch two years ago and terrible in preseason last year, but like many have said he was the only clease clearing defeneseman we had. Also had decent mobility for a player of his mold.
A Salavador-Greene pairing if I remember wasn't horrible. But I forgot. They were either good or bad, so Idk.
Somebody definitely needs to get moved, either via trade or walk away from RFA. Right now we have 10 NHL, or arguably NHL ready, d-men
Not to mention UFA Greene, makes 11.
Obviously, Salvador's health & expiring contract, White's expiring contract, Fraser's questionable quality as an NHL d-man, Urbom's readiness are all issues. But I can see moving 2, or 3, depending on Greene.
If nothing else, guys like Salmela, Fraser, could be draft maneuvering chips for the mid to late rounds
I think Fraser is gone so we don't have to worry about him. If we don't resign greene that will leave us 2 spots open for dmen who can contribute offensively. If greene eats one of those spots then we could put taormina in the 6th or salmela? Corrente can be our extra?
That would put Fayne and Urbom into the AHL.
We have a logjam of mediocre dmen and depth wingers. Splendid.
Fraser probably won't be re-signed, and I guess Lou might try to trade someone else too.
Obviously we don't want to get rid of proven NHL players before we know what we have in the young guys, but I think it's also clear that at least one of them will perform well enough to earn a spot, and we'll need to make room for him somehow.
When I saw you had Fayne listed as the eighth defenseman I was going to say I think he will be a full-time player, the only thing that could stop him is a training camp and preseason that shows this year was a fluke.
I agree. I believe Andy Greene won't be back, unless it's for a real friendly contract.
I really hope Fraser is gone. He is beyond terrible
I don't think we have to worry about him coming back. He played hardball with Lou to get a one way contract. Chances are, he won't be coming back simply because of that. Add in the fact that he isn't very good, and he's gone.
White isn't useless, and I'm not convinced that Salvador is in good enough form to replace what White brings.
That is putting it mildly.
At no point in their respective careers was Bryce Salvador a superior defenseman to Colin White.
And while White is coming off of a strong and consistent season, Sal is struggling with post concussion inner ear issues and can barely skate. And even if he somehow rehabs back into NHL playing shape, which seems like somewhat of a longshot, he is one hit away from retirement (and possible serious or permanent injury.)
The Colin White hate on this board is full retard. But thinking an old, rusty, damaged Salvador can replace what White brings on a consistent basis raises the bar on stupid.
So if Sal is healthy DATW might get his wish. Can't see Lou carrying White Volch and Sal
White - Volchenkov ( Shut down )
Tallinder - Urbom ( 2 way )
Salvador - Greene ( little of both )
Taormina - Fayne ( extra's )
Is something I can get behind but I think Fayne will be on the team next yr in a full-time role.
I really do not think Urbom makes the NHL roster next season (despite my membership in the "Bomb Squad"). It is typical HF overvaluing young prospects, while disregarding his pretty clear need to further develop his game in the AHL.
There will certainly be a lot of competition in camp with a new coach rebuilding this D corps. But I think Fayne has the inside track among the youngsters fighting for a top 6 role.
And curious if Taormina can bounce back from injury and get a real look, or if his moment in the sun was just a momentary blip on Johnny Mac's radar.
Pretty sure Greene gets re-signed, but penciling in Bryce Salavador is a real stretch considering his age relative to what he is battling back from with the concussions.
The ultimate hockey warrior Scott Stevens could not overcome very much the same symptoms and chose to retire. I can very easily see Sal facing the same choice.
The way Tallinder played for the last half of the season gives me hope that Urbom can make it. He knows how to play with raw rookies. Not that i'm saying Urbom is close to Myers. But Tallinder and Urboms skating can make for some great breakouts and Urboms hunger to shoot should bode well for the pair.
If Taormina makes it I can see Fayne and Urbom fighting for a spot assuming no other rookie blows the team away.
Failing unlikely sweeping changes this offseason, Sal vs White is a moot point anyway. 2011-12 will be a transition year where we say goodbye to Salvador, Rolston and - much as I appreciate his career - White. And probably have Marty return at a reduced salary. Not to mention getting out from under the buyouts. Considering a weak UFA class and a little more time for prospects to get into the lineup, 2012-13 is the year to look forward to, so we can start freaking out about extensions for Zajac, Josefson & Tedenby.
