This lineup is as close as I could get to staying the same with a legit goalie. The only major loss is Carle. I kind of like the idea of going with the same team with a legit goalie to see if we can get it done:

Coming from Columbus and watching Sestito play quite a bit, im almost positive he makes your squad out of the gates. For the 9 games he was up this year he was one of our best players and due to contract issues he was the only one we were able to send down. You guys are going to love his style of play and he will play more minutes than anyone is expecting

Can he easily replace Shelley?

Just to give people a heads up: Ville Leino reportedly declined a pair of contracts both at a $3mil cap hit (3yrs @ $9mil and 4yrs @ $12mil).

Sooo it's obviously likely that Leino will not be signed for anything less than that. Just food for thought when planning your roster ...

Wouldn't doubt it. I think he denied a 2.8M one before the end of the season. I think this is probably why we will keep Versteeg.

Agreed. I think Leino wants ~$3.5mil, and as much as Holmgren wants to keep Leino I think he knows where the priorities stand for this team (as I'm sure Snider has drilled 'get a goalie' into his brain).

Looking at it, I could definitely see Versteeg sticking with the team and leaving the forward core looking like this:

_ _ _ _ / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / Kris Versteeg ($3.083m)
James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m)) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m / Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / _ _ _ _
Blair Betts ($0.700m) / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _

4 roster spots open to a number of options, ranging from RFAs (Nodl, Powe) to guys in the system (Read, Holmstrom, Rinaldo) and of course UFAs that Holmgren might have his eye on.

IF Holmgren actually gets a goalie, and no one on this forward core is going to be moved, then it seems likely that a defensemen will be on the move (Carle seems like a possibly casualty). A defense like this:

Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Chris Pronger ($4.921m)
Braydon Coburn ($3.200m) / Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m)
Erik Gustafsson ($0.900m) / _ _ _ _

Would be roughly $21mil in total invested in the defense, 1/3 or so of the total cap ... A defensemen making around ~$1.0m would be ideal for that 5/6 pairing (O'Donnell + Gus pairing?).

In terms of the goalie situation, Holmgren could sign someone to a maximum $5mil caphit and still have about $4mil left for however many slots need to be filled. 4 forwards with under $1.0m contracts (Read, Powe, Nodl, others...) would be perfect. Having some two-way contract shenanigans throughout the year would work well too if there was ever a problem (Read, Gus could all be swapped for guys with lower numbers like Wellwood and Syvret).

Just my thoughts on the situation ... and I would not necessarily be happy with this I just see it as I possibility. I want some toughness and size on the checking lines this coming year, in addition to a proven goaltender.

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Eric Wellwood ($0.580m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / Kris Versteeg ($3.083m)
James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / Andreas Nodl ($0.900m)
Tom Sestito ($0.577m) / Blair Betts ($0.700m) / Darroll Powe ($0.800m)

DEFENSEMEN
Chris Pronger ($4.921m) / Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m)
Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m) / Braydon Coburn ($3.200m)
Jan Hejda ($2.250m) / Erik Gustafsson ($0.900m)

GOALTENDERS
Tomas Vokoun ($4.000m) / Sergei Bobrovsky ($1.750m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $63,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $61,122,488; BONUSES: $1,700,000
CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $1,877,512

I have to say, I'd probably enjoy this. With Carle gone, Gustafsson can really step in and try to take his place (I think he can) and Hedja can be signed (who I think is better than O'Donnell, and not only in age, but he will hammer people and put up some kind of numbers (20 some I'd say) ). Re-sign Nodl, Powe and hopefully Wellwood makes the team. Walker, Leighton and Shelley are all buried in the minors and Shelley will be replaces by Sestito (younger, faster, can hit, will fight, better hands and cheaper). Then sign Vokoun for 2 years @ 4M each year. Even if the cap would go between 62 and 63, we should be fine.

I put Nodl with Briere because he has shown he can do well with him and also it adds a bit more defensive edge to the line (since Leino isn't as good defensively as Nodl). Wellwood didn't look out of place at all in the 3 games he played with Richards and even got an assist.

This is what id like to see. Little change and we get a legit goalie. I do feel though at the trade deadline we will have to make a trade for an extra blueliner. But this is ideal.

If Leino goes I really hope that Versteeg gets shipped away too and we have an actual third line.

JvR-Richards-Giroux
Hartnell-Carter-Briere

Those are two legitimate 1 lines, Hartnell and Carter have worked well together in the past, and that Richards line played well together in last years playoffs.

I'm taking Briere and moving him back to wing, he was abused way to much this off season in his own end, and moving carter back to center.

No matter what happens. If we get a legit goalie, I'm going to be very excited to watch flyers hockey next year. I can't wait to see something on a consistent basis that we haven't gotten to see for more than a decade. A bonafide number 1 goaltender. Just for that I will be pumped..

....I'd also like to see Erik Cole in orange and black.

I really hope that the Flyers (Homer) addresses the third line. If he's not gonna bring in a legit D-first centerman, then Richards should be that guy. And while Richards has been put in that position before, he has never been given that duty for an entire season.

There's also a difference between having that title and actually doing it. Richards sometimes looks for offense first, and I'd like it if there was an actual plan (ie let these other guys worry about offense, you worry about shutting people down).

Assuming our PP turns it around next year, Richards could get ~30 PP points and ~30 SH/EV points and I'd be totally fine with that, so long as his defensive game comes first. Part of the problem is the revolving door of linemates that he's had.

Pretty much this. I'd love Hejda on the team. Can put up better points than O'Donnell, better defensively than Carle and can hit very well. Would work well I think with Gustafsson as well.

If Leino did turn down $3MM per then how about sing that $$ on Gagne?

hartnell - briere - versteeg (versteeg similar production Leino/better defensively)
jvr - giroux - carter
gagne - richards - sestito (gagne more responsible d / sestito adds size)
shelley - betts - nodl/powe (i doubt shelley goes anywhere)

Gagne would be all kinds of epic to bring back, but I don't know if it will go through. Sestito would probably replace Shelley if he were to be sent down to the AHL and play on the 4th line in his place. Sestito might even be better than Carcillo (no idea though, just thinking aloud).

If Ville really did turn down 3M a season then he should be shown the door.

Anything more than 2.5M is overpayment IMO.

Sorry Ville, I will miss your random spin-o-rama no look passes.

If we can't sign Ville then sign me up for the Erik Cole bandwagon as well.

I'd even go as far as saying I'd RATHER have cole than leino. We need his size and his game much more than we need leino.

That's kind of a no brainer. Laich would be an ideal guy for richards if you are gonna go with a more traditional 3rd line but you likely have to over pay to get him out of WAS. Same thing with cole in CAR. Even TB will have a lot of cap sapce to resign gagne.
Not sure of NSH cap sit but a guy like ward would be a decent option for a third line role.

Sestito/Wellwood - richards - ward

Richards would have to get most of his pts on the PP.

Your cap totals are going to be wrong. You need to uncheck the bonus cushion box. The bonus cushion is not available for this upcoming Season. So your roster is likely not going to be Cap compliant.
