Oh, come on now. White has his limits, but to call him redundant and downplay his value is just plain ignorant.

He's not a premier shutdown defenceman at this point of his career, but he's still a steady and consistent veteran to eat minutes and play a key role on penalty kill.

How did we convince St. Louis to give us Salvador for Janssen?

Lou robbed them at gunpoint, obviously.I hope Sal makes a full recovery, but I don't see him playing in the NHL again. Why risk permanent damage?

They felt they couldn't resign him and I guess they wanted some bottom 6 toughness and a home town boy for the fans.

If Taormina makes it I can see Fayne and Urbom fighting for a spot assuming no other rookie blows the team away.
I agree that Tallinder is a good mentor for Urbom. I wouldn't mind pairing Urbom with White either, the kid likes to pinch a lot, so he needs a partner who can cover for him defensively.

Salvador isn't anything until we see him in action again, and that's not until September. We have no idea what he is still capable of. I highly doubt he'll be back to full effectiveness immediately after sitting out a whole season.

If you want to make the argument that Volchenkov makes White redundant, that makes more sense, although I still don't agree. But not a damaged Salvador.

And an injured Janssen, at that. I'm going to say blackmail.

The talk of getting rid of White in favor of Salvador is just crazy

Not only is White and has White been a better defensemen, but to want to get rid of White to clear cap space in favor of a guy who just missed an entire season to a concussion that came with symptoms of Vertigo?

I thought we needed to upgrade the defense.......not get rid of the only guy who can give a first pass out of the zone

I thought White was our best and most consistent defenseman last year, and it was his best season since maybe his rookie year, he stays.

at this point, i'd be pretty bummed if rolston got put through the ringer on the waiver wire again this season. he really had an amazing turnaround, acted like a pro through the whole thing, and still managed to increase his production. its probably pretty safe to assume he'll retire after this year, and i for one would really like to his career end in NJ. just think of all the winks at his retirement press conference. 3 cheers for rolston!

I still doubt that Salvador will play for us next season. He would be a nutter if he did

Exactly.

We have no clue if Salvador will be half the player he once was and the reason he was solid for us was because he played with a edge to his game. Having missed a complete year because of concussion symptoms, he'd be a huge gamble and at 2.9M$ per on a defense that doesn't need another SAH d-men, I wish him good luck elsewhere.

White stays this year and he'll resign the year after that... but for close to half of what he's making atm and I'd be thrilled.

Will say this about Sal, his were not "hockey" fights -- they were fight fights.

His red light would go off and he'd legit try to beat the holy hell out of the other guy.

Tough SOB indeed.

But read the Boogey man articles about what he was dealing with regarding sound and light sensitivity. PCS turns the toughest SOB's into weeping puddles.

At the time they had too many defensemen who played exactly like him. Pieterangelo was still in the minors and Erik Johnson was their only real "offensive" threat on defense, however that proved to be wrong. So they could definitely spare him at the time

That's why Salvador should just hang'em up. He plays a hard nose game and players are finishing their checks real hard cause no one is stopping them like in the good old days, you know, the "trapping" days

He has a real hard decision to make cause health should be his #1 priority IMO.

Salvador was almost too strong of a player to be honest. He'd shove people down to the ice cleanly and get called for a cross check at least once a week.

I wouldn't rush to any conclusions. There is a big difference between being cleared for light workouts and being cleared to play full contact hockey. Don't forget that it has taken 8 months for him to be cleared for light workouts. I don't expect to see him cleared for full contact any time soon.

This is most likely an insurance thing. He has to be progressing if he wants to try and collect insurance for the last season on his contract. If he just retires he doesn't get anything.

Salvador is pound for pound one of the best fighters in the league. He destroys people when he wants fight.

I love him as a player but he's just too redundant at this point.
