I think Pitkanen will stay in Carolina

5 years / 5.4 mil (NMC)

From everything I have heard he enjoys being there

I have a feeling he'll be staying with the Hurricanes.

If not, I could definitely see him headed to Detroit.

I dont have a link as I dont remember where I read it, although I believe it may have been a blogger linked through the teams NHL site.

I'll expand on something that was said priot to the trade deadline

it was suggested that Pitkenen like the canes becuase it lacks the pressure he felt in Edmonton and Philly when he played and that suits his personality better

also--he finally brough his cat over

I think he either stays in Carolina or goes to Detroit. The Red Wings will have the money to pay and they have a need there, but maybe they'll end up getting Bieksa or Ehrhoff instead.

He'll get a huge contract though. As another poster said, no matter what, as soon as it strikes noon on July 1st, GMs will start overpaying for the big fish. Pitkanen will get a raise for sure. Whether it's from Carolina or somewhere else remains to be seen. I could see him easily getting 5M+ per for 4-6 years.

I think this is the guy Burke goes after in UFA since he fits in the age group of most of our team.

4 years 5.25 per

If he goes to Toronto it will be for a lot more money than that. Probably 6 years at 6M per.

but it's basically NEVER a buyers market for top-tier talent in free-agency. people are always going to throw big money at the elite talents in the free agent pool. and with the number of teams that could use a #1/2 puck-mover, i don't see any way he doesn't get big money. and he already made $4.5M last year...doubt very much he doesn't get a raise on that.
So your saying his value is more now than what it was when he first signed? He seems like the same talent to me...

I'm thinking he's our best target. We have the cap space to give him market value and a no-pressure environment. Plus he'd get top minutes.

no we don't want him

he can't play in big markets because of the pressure.

Yeah, the Edmonton - Pitkanen relationship was tested (and failed) once already. As badly as the Oil need a d-man, they won't be going for Pitkanen, and even if they did, I'm sure he wouldn't sign there for 10 million per.
