What I mean by that is at 2.8 cap hit, does that help the Rangers by having a lower comparable for guys like Dubinsky and Callahan?
Could he be considered a comparable to either Brandon or Cally?
Thoughts?
callahan is a versatile #2 that can fill in as a top liner @ RW for about 25-30 goals
Dubinsky is a Power Center thats good so far as a #2 Center or #1 LW
I'd say 1 yr @ 2.8 is perfect for Callahan
and something slightly longer say 2yrs @ 5.25 for Dubinsky is about right. Again its about saving this 1 year since both Avery+Drury are gone from the cap next season
for the Record I'd be shocked if a healthy Okposo isn't at least a consistent 28-40 goal scorer by the time he hits 24 so his value is slightly higher in my view but both Callahan and Dubinsky short term are more experienced and have some playoff experience as well
Callahan and Dubinsky are older and closer to free agency... That has a bigger impact than anything than what the Isles are doing with Okposo on his first new contract as a RFA.
Doesn't help or hurt. Okposo just signed the deal that Callahan is coming off (his 2nd contract). Big difference in length though. Callahan is looking at his 3rd deal. Totally different circumstances.
Different contracts entirely. One has literally nothing to do with the other. It's not much different than comparing the contract Cally will sign to a deal given to a UFA.

I suspect Sather is going to try to do what he did with Staal and Giradi, which is over pay a little now for longer term deals that buy a few of their UFA years. Something in the range of 4-5 years at 3.75-4 per for both. It will still leave enough room to make a quality offer for Richards while giving raises to every noteworthy RFA and even qualifying Gilly if they so choose. Unless they decide to keep both Wolski and Drury of course.

HIGHLY doubtful Dubi or Cally's agent would go for those deals. It's either x years to UFA or x years to UFA + y UFA years bought. Just like Staal. I'm pretty sure Team Sather has a target number for those two that they've worked out to keep everything on budget and ready for a pitch at Richards.

There's no way either one will be offered a 1 or 2 year deal. That would be very bad for us. Yeah, you can pinch a few pennies now, but you'd pay for it later when you have to re-sign them as UFAs. They will both sign for at least 3 years, more likely at least 4 years.

Ace... your instincts on this are about a mile off course. Expect Cally & Dubi to get 3.25-4M over long term contracts. Unless negotiations go very poorly, there is absolutely no benefit to signing either to short term deals. The Rangers have plenty of cap space now that the cap is going up. They would have been relatively ok even if it hadn't.
Zajac was a group II with arbitration rights in 2009. Same summer as Callahan who had arb rights and Dubinsky who didn't have arb rights
Zajac has the same agent as Dubinsky. Kurt Overhardt
4 years/$15.5M/$3,887,500
3 arbitration years and 1 group III year
$2.75M
$3.5M
$4.5M
$4.8M
Overhardt wanted a similar deal for Dubinsky but the Rangers didn't have the space for that so they did a 2 year/$3.7M deal. $2M is his QO. Dubinsky could jump to $3M plus in his first year and top out at over $4M plus in the last year. He is two years away from group III. Look at Zajac's contract.
Overhardt got Ryan Kesler 6 years/$30M from Vancouver. 2 group II and 4 group III. Steal for Vancouver. Made the jump from $1.75M to $5M.
Sharp had one good season in Chicago and he was rewarded with 4 years/$15.6M/$3.9M
1 arbitration year and 3 group III years
$3.3M
$4M
$4.1M
$4.2M
Fisher got 5 years/$21M/$4.25M
All group III years
$6M
$4M
$4M
$4M
$3M
Backes signed a 5 year SPC taking him off the group III market. 5 years/$22.5M/$4.5M. He took less to stay in St.Louis. Backes would have gotten $5M as a group III UFA on July 1. It's not unrealistic Callahan could get $4.5M as a group III next summer if he has a good season and stays healthy.
Man Dubinsky is gonna cash in being the best NYR and player in the Eastern Conference. The Okposo deal means nothing because well, Dubinsky is better than him too!

it shouldnt do much, this was okposo's second contract, this will be callahans third. i think callahan will get a 4 year contract paying 3.75 million per year.

hahaha I made that exact same face when I read that.
I know that Cally and Dubi might be more established players but i honestly see more potential in Okposo than those two. That guy got some wheels and a good quick shot. I think he has more 30 goal ability than Cally or Dubi. But they are all good young players.
Exactly Okposo was signing through RFA years, Dubi and Cally don't have as many RFA years to sign through. I'd really like to see both signed for 4m each for 4years, even better if they can sign them to a 6 year deal.

After this year I consider Dubi and Cally almost as if not just as good as Okposo. I always considered Kyle an ideal second line player while Dubi and Cally were on the borderline.
